Thread: British stand-ups

    British stand-ups

There was a thread about this in the old board, but I only glanced at it and now its gone.

I recently got the 3 Stewart Lee stand-up albums and I love them. He's as good as Paul F Tompkins or Patton to me. So anyone know which other British stand-ups I should look for? I like Dylan Moran okay and I've heard the big names, but I imagine there are others who are great who maybe haven't crossed over yet.

Daniel Kitson sometimes performs in New York and if you can see him, he's NOT to be missed. So great.

I'll second his Kitson and up him a Brendon Burns and Jim Jeffries. Both very crude comedians with wonderful senses of humour AND flights of fancy.

    Also, Glen Wool.

Ross Noble is fun for mostly improv stuff. Fizzy Logic starts out slow, but really picks up once he starts interweaving all the bits he's picked up from the audience.

I've only heard one Sean Lock standup album and it was okay, but he's so blindingly good on 8 out of 10 Cats and in other such contexts, he just has to be great on stage too.

Dara O'Briain is also great with audience interaction, and also has some really solid material and a great, relaxed delivery.

I second that. Spencer Brown is quite funny. I'm not much into his songs or characters, but his stand up is great.

This neither contemporary nor technically stand-up, but it's both brilliant and from the UK.

This seems very "British" to me and I mean that in a bad way.

Jim Jeffries is Australian living in London and Glen Wool is Canadian living in London.

If you like Stewart Lee check out his old buddy Richard Herring... find the bootlegs of his one man show "Christ on a Bike". It's fantastic and very similar in style to Stewart Lee.

    Good hunting

But I'll second you on their quality.

Ugh. I've seen him once. He didn't tell one joke, he just acted all coked out and angry about women.

Jim Jeffries HBO special, I Swear to God, that just aired a week ago is fantastic. Some of his "joke" jokes are just okay, but his stories are across the board great. The story he tells at the end of the special is masterful. He's such a great storyteller, it all seems to come so naturally for him.

But he is Australian, you cunts.

Ardal O'Hanlon, Tommy Tiernan, & Dylan Moran are coming to town. I'd probably go for Moran alone, but I haven't heard of the other two...and with tickets being $45, that makes it less of an impulsive decision. Any kind (or not so) words for Ardal O'H or Tommy T?

(And yes, I know, technically they're Irish not British, so cut some slack, jack.)

Tommy Tiernan recently had a showcase on Comedy Central...I laughed.

But Ardal O'Hanlon was freaking FATHER DOUGAL on "Father Ted" (not to mention Thermo Man in "My Hero")! He had a CCP a few years ago that I rather enjoyed.

Sounds like you've got one hell of a show there!

Regardless of whether you were joking, what you have just said is wrong.

True. And many an Irishman/Irishwoman would punch me square in the mouth for it.
