It's nice how the datedness makes some of them funnier. ie. the clothing worn in Kids in the Hall sketches cracks me up.

I re-watched season 1 recently and I could not get over that in certain sketches. Though I venture to say some of their clothing choices weren't even good at the time. Like Bruce's flannel over a white tucked in shirt and jeans combo.

I think the term "cd-rom" is a joke in and of itself. It's dated for even back then. And it still works now because the point is that they're out of touch, so they'd call a DVD a "CD-rom" anyway.

I don't think DVDs were around in 1996, I first got a DVD player in 1999 and I don't think I was a latecomer to the technology. If they were around in 1996, not many people had them. CD-ROMs though would have been the "cool" technology at the time, and I'm sure there were X-rated CD-ROMs.

I have been watching Mr. Show on IFC lately, and even though the show still generally holds up and is funny, there are a couple of instances where the show is actually a little bit dated. I was watching "A Talking Junkie" this morning, and in the family run porn shop sketch the part where Jill Talley finds an "X-rated CD-ROM" in David's backpack really places the timeline of the show squarely in 1996.
Also "Rap: The Musical" and even Three Times One Minus One come off as really outdated parodies these days; the groups they're parodying aren't even "rap" music so much as R&B groups like Jodeci and Color Me Badd and the like. I realize it's part of the joke that it is so laughably out of touch, but Bob's appearance as an "old good tooth who lives in the mouth of a homie" is almost ridiculously outdated these days.

Generally they tried to stay away from topical things, even when they did an O.J. parody they couched it in a sketch about a popemobile chase, which is good because it makes it more timeless. I guess this episode was one of the more obviously "mid-90s" episodes though.

Another example of what I'm talking about: the "Underground Tape Railroad" sketch. These days, it's really hard to imagine a bunch of college kids sitting around watching "underground" VHS tapes that a friend got for them (actually VHS tapes in general are pretty obsolete). This sort of thing has now been kind of superseded by the Internet and Youtube.

That one is probably the most representative of what you're saying but I think those sketches still have funny jokes in that the type of tapes they're watching are super silly.
