    Bill Hicks: American

A new documentary about Hicks. The US premiere was at SxSW in Austin. I saw it and liked it a lot. They're doing some more festival stuff and looking for distribution now. It was produced by two English guys - Hicks is more famous there than he ever was here.

This is the website for the film.

    This is the official trailer.

This is my interview with the director and Hicks' brother.

Yessss...I've watched the trailer and available clips several times and am dying to see it. It looks great. It eased my mind a bit, as I had previously heard that Russel Crowe had bought the rights to the story and was planning to star. When I first saw mention of this film I thought: "Oh shit."

I wouldn't mind a Russel Crowe biopic of Hicks, if it meant Americans would finally know who he was. But I'd much rather have Hicks be Joaquin Phoenix.

There's a lot of really amazing footage in the film - Hicks saved tapes that started when he was a teenager (and his family saved them after he died).

I've emailed them a couple of times trying to get them to come to SF. We just had a sold out screening of the new Eddie Izzard film, I know we can get this to work.

    Looking forward to it...

Hey, Mr. Thorn, have you ever read Cynthia True's (extensive) biography, American Scream? How does this compare?

I haven't, no. But I like being called Mr. Thorn for no good reason. Keep that up and I'll give you a quarter for a phosphate.

Instead of American Scream, may I recommend this book instead?

Get Kevin Booth's "Bill Hicks: Agent of Evolution"...it will make Ms. True's book seem not-so-extensive as you think.

Ah, the Sacred Cow himself. I completely forgot about that book. I'll check it out, thanks.

Didn't want to make a whole thread about it but I came across this 1993 New Yorker profile of Hicks

    http://www.newyorker.com/archive/199...urrentPage=all

Some of you may have read it already but it is really interesting..

Apologies for the thread necromancy, but I didn't want to create a new thread to share this:

Russell Crowe to make Bill Hicks biopic his directorial debut.
