    The Bachelorette

Release Date: September 7, 2012 (limited)
    Studio: Radius (The Weinstein Company)
    Director: Leslye Headland
    Screenwriter: Leslye Headland
Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, James Marsden, Adam Scott, Rebel Wilson, Kyle Bornheimer
    Genre: Comedy

Plot Summary: On the night before an old friend's wedding, three frisky bridesmaids go searching for a little fun but find much more than they bargained for. With lovely Becky (Rebel Wilson) set to marry her handsome sweetheart, Dale (Hayes MacArthur), the remaining members of her high school clique reunite for one last bachelorette bacchanal in the Big Apple. Regan (Kirsten Dunst) is an overachieving, ueber-Maid of Honor who's secretly smarting over the fact that she's not the first to marry, while Gena (Lizzy Caplan) is a whip-smart sarcastic who's actually a closet romantic, and Katie (Isla Fisher) is a ditzy beauty who loves the good life. But when Becky insists on keeping the bachelorette party tame, the women proceed with an after-hours celebration of their own.

So was this too far along to stop when Bridesmaids hit big or is it simply a shameless copycat?

It was first announced in the Hollywood Reporter back on May 2nd, 2011 , which is before "Bridesmaids" was released in theaters.

Wasn't Casey Wilson originally supposed to be playing the bride, or did all those early articles say it was her by mistake when they actually meant Rebel Wilson?

Also, the movie was originally an Off Broadway play that premiered in July 2010. Leslye Headland, the writer/director of the movie, wrote the play, as well.

I can kind of see why this is going mostly to on-demand. It wasn't very good. It's sort of a more R-rated version of "Bridesmaids", with more drug use and drinking, and a lot of pointless swearing and dirty talk that didn't really make things any funnier. The difference is that the characters in Bridesmaids were actually likeable, which none of the characters in this movie are with the exception of Wilson's character (and she is in it the least of anyone)

Kirsten Dunst's character is just a straight up "C" (and this isn't me saying this, someone actually calls her this in the movie), with nothing likeable about her whatsoever. Isla Fisher is a drunk, cocaine-snorting slut who seems proud of how dumb she is. Lizzy Caplan is sort of a less endearing version of her character from "Party Down", but not written as well. Her scenes with Adam Scott are the only times the movie ever really approaches being funny, probably because they improvised those scenes.

Occasionally you can have a movie where you don't like any of the characters, if it's a dark comedy like "The Rules of Attraction" or something, but not in a romantic comedy which is ostensibly supposed to be a light piece of fluff. Here you have three main characters who think it's funny to call their "friend" Pigface and make fun of how big her wedding dress is- and we're supposed to be rooting for them? No.

I was really looking forward to this. I am a sucker for a "girls can party and be crazy, too!" movie. I'll probably still see it (on demand) but I don't have as high of hopes for it now.

Rented this last night on iTunes and really loved it. Not sure it was meant to be a romantic-comedy, even though it was marketed like a Bridesmaids-type movie. Aside from the obvious similarities, it really isn't anything like Bridesmaids. You can definitely feel that this used to be a play. And, yes, the three leads are such terrible assholes, but it's done in such a real and great way. It was a lot of fun seeing Kirsten Dunst play a funny role again and the supporting cast was great as well-- especially Adam Scott and Kyle Bornheimer. They both killed me.

Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there so people didn't automatically dismiss this as some shitty Bridesmaids knockoff. It's a pretty different thing altogether.

"To Bill Brasky!" as in "I salute Bill Brasky!", or "That was too Bill Brasky", as in "too anal-retentive and suck-the-fun-out-of-everything by over analyzing things too much"? Either way, you are correct.
