IFC is now showing this 1999 Jay Mohr series where he plays a weaselly movie exec, every morning at 5 AM. I had forgotten how funny and ahead of its time the show was. There are definite overtones of "The Larry Sanders Show", but the dialogue is really fast and funny and the single-camera, movie-like aesthetic would fit in these days more on NBC or FOX than it did back then in the "Friends" era.
The writing is what really jumps out as being good. The show's main writer and creator, Chris Thompson, now appears to be writing for the Disney Channel's "Shake It Up" (lol), but there are also episodes written by Jim Vallely ("Arrested Development") and there's even a couple of episodes written by Will Forte!
I seem to remember this show had some kind of deal where they shot the episodes with cursing intact and then bleeped out the cursing for network airing, with an eye on cable airing in the future. That's kind of interesting and it doesn't seem like they'd do anything like that on network TV these days.
