ABC orders new comedy-based reality show

ABC has ordered a new reality competition show from two "Last Comic Standing" producers in which comedians have to be funny on the fly.

In "The Fast & the Funniest," a group of stand-ups travel cross-country competing in challenges and performances. The first three to reach the final destination will perform for a cash prize.

The project's order is contingent on casting, with APA-repped Page Hurwitz and Javier Winnik producing the show.

"Funniest" could represent a more urgent take on the comic-competition series format made popular by "Standing," which ran for several years on NBC until it was canceled in 2008.

If greenlighted, "Funniest" would debut on the network in late midseason or next summer. It joins ABC's upcoming auto-competition series "Crash Course" and the Jamie Oliver weight-loss series among the network's reality efforts in development.

I expect Pardo to take a break from the Tonight Show to do this with Belknap. Awesome

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. Like any reality show, the editing will make a huge difference. I'm curious who'll be cast, and whether this format will favor genuinely funny people (as you'd assume) or just whoever spits out the most hack jokes at any given time...

Hopefully it will be more like "Bands on the Run" and less like the lame competition it will surely end up as.

The producers of this show saw me do a set recently at Akbar, the gay bar in Silverlake. The place was quite full and the audience was primarily lesbians. They hated me a lot, from the very beginning. It's funny, because I do that show (Bruce Daniels' "Drunk on Stage") a lot and it's really one of my favorites. This night was different though. Lots of hate, aimed at me. Anyway, what I'm saying is I'll probably be on "The Fast & the Funniest".
