Thread: 44 Nights of Moral Orel begins!

44 Nights of Moral Orel begins!

Dino sent this out earlier today:
Okay look... I wasn't going to do this but there is absolutely no promotion for this and every cable listing is showing that Aqua Teen Hunger Force is in Moral Orel's spot.

Oct 6th kicked off ten straight weeks of Moral Orel airing Mondays Thru Thursdays at 12:15 am. The premiere episodes from Season 3 will be peppered throughout with reruns setting up the new ones.

I am doing intros to all the episodes either by myself, with Scott Adsit, Nick Weidenfeld or Mike Lazzo (the guy who canceled or cancelled the show).

So while stationed overseas, I missed the 44 nights as I had no knowledge of such an awesome show existing. Does anyone have a list of the true chronological order? Also, any word of a volume two US release? Thanks in advance for any information.

Re: 44 Nights of Moral Orel begins!

Thank you for your letter, Chris.

The best way to watch the episodes is probably the way I'm about to describe. Dino posts here and can probably give you a righter answer, if there is one:

Season 1 in production order. This is how Season 1 is presented on the volume 1 DVD.

Season 2 in air-date order. The first five episodes of Season 2 are on the volume 1 DVD in air-date order. If you look at the production numbers for Season 2 (as epguides.com shows them; these could be bunk for all I know) they are all over the place. Nature 1 & Nature 2 wouldn't follow each other at all. Other continuity errors would present themselves if you were to try and watch them by production code.

Season 3 is the season that goes all over the place. Most of the episodes take place sometime before the "Nature" episodes, and a few take place right after the "Nature" episodes. Some take place during them. A couple are mostly flashbacks that take place before Orel was even born. One episode, "Sundays", takes place over the course of the entire series run.

The episodes in Season 3 are numbered; each episode starts out saying "episode X of 13", and artistically they make sense to watch in that order. The general idea is that the episodes while chronologically "out of order" give new meaning to moments you already saw. The order currently listed on epguides.com for season 3 is, as far as I can tell, correct, except for some reason the series finale "Honor" is missing.

44 Nights of Moral Orel wasn't so much presenting the episodes in "chronological order" as much as it was a nightly re-airing of the entire series with the then-new Season 3 episodes premiering throughout. The episodes in Season 3 were highly referential to previous episodes so the repeats that ran before each new Season 3 episode were strategically chosen to be episodes with key moments or bits of character development that would play into the season 3 episode that was going to be airing shortly after it.

But 44 Nights wasn't chronological. I don't have a list of the episodes, but here's what the first week looked like:

Night #1: The Lord's Prayer (The episode where Orel's little brother Shapey gets switched with Block)
    Night #2: Nature pt. 1
    Night #3: Nature pt. 2
Night #4: Numb (Season 3 premiere)

Definitely not chronological, but it sets up "Numb" pretty nicely since it takes place during the events of "Nature" and the kids getting switched figures into the plot.

Wait what am I doing being helpful on this board? This needs to stop.

Wow, straight from the source. Thanks to Jixby and Dino for the prompt responses.

Re: 44 Nights of Moral Orel begins!

I've been reading this board for over a decade, and in all that time I don't think I've ever seen Jixby respond to a topic with complete and utter sincerity. Since it is well-established that Jixby has impeccable taste in comedy (and presumably in all of life), I guess that means "Moral Orel" is one of the greatest things ever, which means I need to go back and fill in the gaps I missed during its initial run. Thanks, Jixby! (and Dino, but that should go without saying...)

Congrats, Jixby. That's a Brasky-esque post if I've ever seen one!

I think this was mentioned a while back, but a Volume 2 DVD of "Moral Orel" was released in Region 4 on August 18th.

I haven't heard any plans for a Region 1 release, but it looks like DVD rips of the episodes have been posted in alt.binaries.multimedia.

Well, I guess until we get a R1 release, we'll have to "settle" for the Dino commentary via the AS/moral orel/extras area. Fuckin' Aussies get to have all of the fun.

Re: 44 Nights of Moral Orel begins!

Hey, thanks for the heads up. I'll look for it this weekend.

What's weird though is that they're also releasing a 'Minoriteam' DVD in Australia soon. Who the fuck wants that?

Wait, this is out on region 4. Sweet, living in New Zealand has some payoff.

I guess there are never going to be plans to release these in the US, but the "Volume 3" DVD for Moral Orel (which contains the final season) is coming out in Australia on April 20th.

I guess I'll import both sets then, probably be a lot cheaper than the Make Your Own DVD thing that Adult Swim has.
