View Full Version : NNF Guests You'd Like To Hear

KeithTalent
July 21, 2008, 1:47 PM
The show is so successful now that I imagine a lot of comics would be willing to do it. It'd be great exposure to an audience of people who "get it" and genuinely love comedy.

I can see why The Gang would want to stick to people they know well. You don't want to risk some stranger clunking everything up. But I'm guessing Pardo has worked with basically everybody in the world, and knows who's funny in the moment vs. who wouldn't be able to keep up.

Anyway who cares, this is just a thread for makin' wishes

I'd like to hear Bill Burr on the show. That guy is a stitch, and he seems naturally funny.

Also, some females. Jen Kirkman, Jackie Kashian, Esther Ku, somebody.

Yeah, Jackie Kashian.

Also... I can't figure out why, but I love the eps with Gilmartin - not a new one, but one I'd like to hear... again.

I think the existence of this thread is OK, but in the old NNF thread, requests for particular guests never went over well. I guess the best I can say is, don't expect Jimmy to even look at it. The rule has always been "friends," not "people he's worked with" and he doesn't need to be told who he's friends with.

However, if you would like to fantasize about Kevin McDonald or Santa Claus being on NNF then I am all for it.

This is a bad idea if you ask me. What makes that show work is that the people know each other well enough to be able to shit on each other. I don't wanna hear something where Jimmy sucks up to the guest.

KeithTalent
July 21, 2008, 2:18 PM
Well I'd figure most comedians can take a joke from the Shooter. I wouldn't suggest having Jamie Foxx on the show.

And while Burr seems to mostly hang out back east, there are lots of awesome UCB regulars who haven't been on the show yet. I'm sure Jimmy and Wheels know most of them.

Why in god's name wouldn't this thread's existence be ok. I could have gone in the NNF thread and tried to tell them what to do, but instead I made a different thread so that people can just talk about things. Message boards are for talking right

Pardo was on an episode of Dork Forest, Jackie Kashian's podcast. So if you are looking to hear them interact, there is a place for it.

I agree with Tron, etc. that requesting guests for friendly chat is a bit weird, but when Jimmy mentions a comic I like in a way that makes me think they are friends or friendly, I do get excited that they might be on the show. So far Greg Fitzsimmons is the main person that I'd like to hear with Pardo. However, I doubt either will be a guest on each other's show.

People Jimmy has mentioned in friendly way who might be great guests are: Andy Kindler, Kennedy of MTV fame, Patton, Tom Wilson and Chip Pope. If none of those happen, that'd work too. He's got a pretty big list of regulars now.

Keith, I think that you might have a mistaken idea of all comedians being friends. I imagine the UCB is a friendlier place than most clubs, but not everyone who performs there hangs out with each other, I'd guess.

KeithTalent

Oh man Kindler would be fantastic

I don't think it's bad idea as such. I do agree with Berliner that the familiarity of the guests with Jimmy is part of what makes the show great. But we don't know who Jimmy knows. I had no idea Jimmy knew Rob Cordry, and he was great on the show. I think suggestions are fine, but we do need to keep Berliner's point in mind.

Why do we need to keep Berliner's point in mind

If I want to hear fuckin' Nancy Pelosi on the show that doesn't mean it's gonna happen. What is the problem? Is Jimmy gonna punch me in the face for talking about it?

No, but people are coming from the assumption that this was created to actually propose possible guests.

No. But his point that part of what makes the show great is Jimmy's familiarity with the guest, is a valid one.

I'm not saying not to make suggestions. More that we just shouldn't get our panties knotted if they're not on. I'm sure Jimmy and Matt have a good feel for what will work well on the show.

I'd love to hear more of Jimmy's friends in "the industry" so to speak who aren't necessarily stand-up comics. I have yet to be disappointed in a guest and would love if Jimmy had on, say, a good writer friend of his that a lot of folks might not know about.

I think what we are trying to say is that Jimmy should be more outgoing and try to make more friends.

Jimmy has Internet bodyguards who protect him from such things I think. They are the message board equivalent of a 300 lb Russian steel worker so be careful. They will punch you with words.

As for a guest I would like to hear on the show, as much as Jimmy talks about Andrew Koenig's "wacknut beliefs" I'd love to have him in the circle of mics proper so he could share those beliefs, and Jimmy could make fun of them.

Hilarity would in fact ensue.

Maybe Andrew and Elwood could have a freak-off. The hippie triathlon - hacky-sack, frisbee golf, unicycling. Try to find out who believes in the wackiest new age nonsense ("I believe in pyramid power!" "Once a week I use crystals to cleanse the evil spirits from my dreamcatcher!") A tie-dye fashion show.

As long as this is a thread that Jimmy will never ever read, I'll feel free to ask this:

Is anyone else slightly annoyed by the way he ends the show now with "...on the Primo!" instead of the old "...on the Podcast!" I have no good reason why this should get on my nerves, but it does...

I can put an end to all of this speculation on what Jimmy wants or doesn't want.
The guys are right, the show works best with people I know well or know will work well on the show. I don't want the show to be "interviewie" and I fear that would happen with a person who is not in my loop. Matt and I have worked hard to get new people this season and that will continue. Scheduling is the biggest problem as getting 4 people to agree on a time that the studio is also free can sometimes be impossible.

That said, I don't think I'm ugly and I will now continue to say "On the Primo" knowing it pisses one person off.

I really do appreciate the love that this board gives the show. While it has grown far beyond our expectations... it started here and it's always nice to come home.
I have no idea what the hell I just typed. It was supposed to be nice and ended up sounding like something an freshman girl would write on a yearbook.

ps- i know interviewie is not a word.

While I certainly enjoy the new guests, we've had a ton of them recently and there are a lot of great guests from seasons one and two that have yet to appear in three. Paul Gilmartin, Pete Schwaba, and the Sklars have all been absent this season, and Paul F., Graham, Scott Aukerman, and even Danielle have only been on once.

I think I'd rather hear more from those people than have more new guests.

Just doesn't hit my ear the same way... I know no one cares (as they shouldn't - I barely do), I was just sharing a random thought since I really thought you'd never look at this thread. Ah well... keep up the fantastic work, Mr. Pardo... you have my $20 and you'll have my next $20 in a few weeks.

Darryl
July 21, 2008, 9:59 PM
At the risk of sounding like a kissass fanboy: Pardo can have a rock as a guest and I'll be happy. I have not heard a single episode (and I've listened to them all) that has left me unhappy. Sure, some are better than others, but they all make me laugh out loud. Funny thing is, sometimes I'll listen to one for a second (or even third) time, and I hear things that escaped me me the first time.

So, have whatever guest you want, I'm in. If I did have the power to pick a guest, though: I can never get enough of Maria Bamford. I'll take her over Lincoln any day.

My lifelong joke about my name is that every time a character is named Darryl in a movie or on TV, they are either black or gay. (Never both.) I am neither. But I was born and raised in a Detroit ghetto, and was one of very few white guys in my neighborhood and high school.

Funny thing is, I read a study recently wherein they tried to determine if resumes were discriminated against based solely on having an "ethnic" name. "Darryl" was in the top 10 names discriminated against.

Well, apparently he once had lunch with Ricky Gervais. Having lunch with someone makes you close friends doesn't it?

I'd really like to hear a show featuring Matt doing Wii Fit while playing the recorder, all the while being mocked by Jimmy, Pat and Danielle. Oliver is also fun to have around.

Elise(spell?) and the unnamed spawn of Wheels would be good in future too. It's got to be someone JP knows, or it's an interview, and that turns it into AST radio a bit. That's good too, but it's not NNF.

To put this back on Keith's track, I would honestly love to hear NNF sit down with Louis CK, hell even if it were "teleconferenced" since he is predominantly in NY (I would guess).

I could give a list of a bunch of other comedians (nice to hear Daly by the way) I would like to hear, but if I were to make one wish in this world (and it hinged on having to do with NNF for some reason), Louis would be it.

Oh good, a bump

For the record, I don't think all comics hang out with each other. I'm not an idiot. But there seems to be a "scene" centered around the UCB and Belly books a show there and Jimmy's probably worked with half the major comics in the country. I figured he could know someone's personality well enough to have a funny conversation with them without being on their speed dial. Maybe that's incorrect, I dunno.

I want a contest where a listener gets to be on the show and clunk things up for an hour

I'm still completely baffled as to why this topic would bother the hosts, but I don't need any more shit for it so maybe just let this thing die

Andy Kindler would be great, but I doubt he would ever do it. He even has a bit about the awkwardness of doing podcasts... something along the lines of: "Hey, we barely know each other, would you sit in my kitchen and talk into a microphone for two hours?"

Oh, and one person who has been mentioned on the show many times and never been on: Brody Stevens. I've seen first hand Jimmy showing no restraint in shitting on him.
