Highlights:
.17 nominations for "30 Rock", including best comedy series, best direction in a comedy series, best writing in a comedy series, acting nominations for Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey, and guest acting nominations for Rip Torn, Will Arnett, Steve Buscemi, Tim Conway, Carrie Fisher, Edie Falco, and Elaine Stritch
."Flight of the Conchords" is also nominated for writing in a comedy series, and two songs from the show are nominated- "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" and "Inner City Pressure"
.The Extras special is nominated for writing and directing, and Gervais got an acting nomination for it as well
.Sarah Silverman didn't get a nomination for The Sarah Silverman Program, but she did get a guest acting nomination for her role on "Monk"
.Amy Poehler is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series. SNL's been nominated for writing many times, but I think this is the first time anyone's been nominated for acting on SNL since Chevy Chase.
Edit: I was wrong...Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon were both nominated during their tenures on the show, but in the variety/music program category. I think this is the first time an SNL cast member has been nominated in the comedy category though.

and upon closer inspection of the full list of nominations, you'll notice that sarah got THREE nods. in addition to the guest actor nom, she also scored for orginal song (I'm F-ing Matt Damon) and for some short version of the SSP (must be an internet thing).

The award categories are seemingly endless. For instance, why is makeup on a single-camera show different than makeup on a multi-camera show?

Because they're lit and shot differently and require different things? Kind of a silly question, ILIS.

Jesus! Good for 30 Rock, they deserve it.
Boo for not giving Sarah the lead actress nomination for her show. Ugly Betty? Really?
And if Imaginationland loses to Family Guy, I will give the Emmys such a pinch.

Wire (pretty much) shut out again. How can such true quality programming literally be this ignored? I love me some Lost, I really really (really) do, but is it necessarily one of the best dramatic series on television? Hell no, it has great moments to be sure, but it isn't anywhere close to one of the BEST drama series this year.
The Wire, there has to be a conspiracy afoot.

One episode is submitted for Emmy consideration. There really is no one episode of The Wire that is self-contained.

And Lost is? The last season especially had more of a continuing story I thought, the difference being that everybody watches one and barely anyone watched the other.

16 nominations for Mad Men!
Including a guest actor nomination for my girlfriend's dad, Robert Morse!

I dunno, I've never seen Lost in my life!

It's a complete sham that The Wire has been shafted all these years. Alan Sepinwall mentioned this in his blog a couple weeks ago:
Two spies on the drama series nominating panels said that the panelists (most over 50, as per usual) hated "The Wire" and "Dexter" and ate up "Boston Legal" and "Damages."

This sums up my feelings about the Emmy's, from the Keith Phipps AV Club
"Host for a reality or reality-competition program
Ryan Seacrest, American Idol
Tom Bergeron, Dancing With the Stars
Howie Mandel, Deal or No Deal
Heidi Klum, Project Runway
Jeff Probst, Survivor
One of these people will win an Emmy. Andre Royo will not."

The Individual Performance in a Variety/Music/Comedy Series/Special is usually a category that gets on my nerves because every year Letterman, Jon Stewart, etc have to go up against people like Sting or Tony Bennett and always lose to them. However, this year, I will be excited for whoever wins:
Stephen Colbert
Tina Fey (for hosting SNL--the first time an SNL host has ever been nominated for this category)
David Letterman
Don Rickles (for Mr. Warmth)
Jon Stewart
Not a bad pick among them (although Tina winning for this would seem kind of odd and confusing. Was she really that good hosting SNL?)
I'm also excited for Amy Poehler being nominated for Best Supp. Actress in a Comedy Series (because of a rule change, the SNL cast members are now only eligible for this category, which is typically reserved for sitcom actors...)
30 Rock dominated in the Guest Actor/Actress categories with Carrie Fisher, Edie Falco, and Elaine Strich in Actress and Will Arnett, Steve Buscemi, Tim Conway, and Rip Torn in Actor. I'm a little surprised by the choices in Actor, where I was expecting Matthew Broderick and David Schwimmer, who had more substantial roles in their episodes than Buscemi, Conway, and Torn. Regardless, I'm happy to see the show represented so heavily. Arnett's the favorite to win, as far as I'm concerned.
I know some of you are decrying LOST's inclusion in Best Drama Series over The Wire, but I can't help but champion LOST, especially since it was overlooked for a nomination the last two seasons (when I thought it was very much deserving.)

I'm with conundrum. Either Emmys mean excellence in broadcasting, or they don't. The Wire near-shutout completely obliterates any shred of credibility they might have had. What's interesting, though, is that they did not realize this. I mean, it's in their interest to recognize The Wire too.

I don't know how to feel about Heath Ledger not getting a nomination, even though he didn't appear in any TV project.

Well, the fact that they nominated "Two & A Half Men" for Best Comedy Series should indicate the Emmys don't have much credibility to begin with....

Well, it's one thing to nominate one or two amiable hits in a sea of obvious distinction, and it's quite another to just pretend that Shakespeare isn't active during the period you're responsible for handing out awards for play-writing. Two and a Half Men doesn't "destroy" the Emmys' credibility... ignoring The Wire does. The two things are not comparable.
Having said that, the shows they nominated are good shows, for the most part. They're not all like Two and a Half Men, which speaks well for the Emmys. But those two nitwits on the nominating board, if that's how it happened, tip it to the far side of the "disgrace" line, that's all I'm saying. It's not cute, it's a disgrace.
PS: I'm overreacting, and I got the detail on the board wrong. But it still is the kind of decision that undermines the entire premise.
