July 16, 2008, 7:24 PM
iowa was surprisingly awesome. i wanna go back next year.
i'm working on the line-up and will only announce it if ticket sales are slow.
and...
the CD is meant to be an example of my headliner set that i was doing in comedy clubs at the time of the taping, april 20, 2008, so as such, i wanted to leave in some flaws, and some riffs that might not ever be uttered by me again. as a writer in a publication i can't recall the name of said about my style, "he has a penchant for dicking around."
so no, i don't wish i could change anything. matt and ryan are great to work with because my happiness with the product was as important as their own. and my plan is to try to record a new CD every april 20, and i'll announce the next city/location early in '09!

Dear Doug,
When is the new I Love Movies episode, the one your blog said featured both Odenkirk and Hardwick, going up? Or is it up already and I missed it? Did the feed change or something? If so, where can I find it?
Sincerely,

if you can't find it, it's probably not up yet. i don't control the posting of the show, just the hosting of the show. when matt has time i'm sure he'll make it happen.

Doug, isn't it tiring travelling around so much? Or do you love it? What's the best hotel? I like Holiday Inn Express.
dougbenson
July 20, 2008, 4:14 PM
traveling all the time is a drag but i'm getting pretty good at it. there isn't enough consistency with hotel chains for me to name a favorite. embassy suites are cool, and i always enjoy a W hotel when i get to stay in one.

i usually shoot on wednesday in l.a. and then head out of town (like kansas city this week - had a great time, my apologies to people who live in independence, mo) or if i'm on the east coast i'll slip in and do my parts in nyc.

Hey Doug,
Some friends of mine in NYC (Team Submarine) told me you did the Doug Benson Interruption out there. Would you ever do that somewhere else again, or was that a one-time-dealio? I love the parts that got posted on AST Radio back in the day.

I love the parts that got posted on AST Radio back in the day.
Speaking of which, I remember some talk about either more AST Radio highlight shows, or even (dare I dream it?) Interruptions being podcasted in toto...is there still any chance that's going to happen? Should I be harassing Belknap about it instead of you?
Who's opening your Raleigh shows? I'm gonna try to get out to one of those. A four hour drive isn't so bad. I'm often tempted to bitch about how good comics almost never come to Charlotte but frankly it's probably the right decision

im pretty sure that the reason they dont get recorded anymore was that matt and doug didnt want to ask comedians if they could record new bits that they were working on. the whole point of TBI is to get doug to react to new bits from his friends, or thats at least what i gather.

Also, when they said they were going to regularly record the Interruption and podcast it, this was before NNF.
When NNF came along, I sort of assumed AST Radio was going on indefinite hiatus. Matt's only got so much time in one day.

i think you guys answered all the questions above for me. there are several reasons we don't do TBI podcasts, all of which are mentioned above. the bottom line for me is that it's a great live experience, and the acts should be able to fuck around without their (untested) material being broadcast on the internet.
so mainly TBI will remain a live show at the ucb theater in l.a. (now on the second monday of each month at 11:00pm) with an occasional performance elsewhere (like at ucb-ny on august 7 and possibly at another sketchfest in s.f.).
and graham elwood will be joining me for the shows at goodnights in raliegh.

Hey Doug. Not sure if this has been asked yet on some other thread..sorry if this is the case.
On your album you made reference to writing on stage (lawers who throw down the mic)
What is your writing process like? Do you wait for inspiration or do you take time out of your day to sit down and write? Or do you tour enough that you can do all your writing on stage?

YOU STOLE MY QUESTION. Doug please come back to Iowa when I am in school so I can go. If you need to double check and make sure I am there feel free to email me.
But I really came to ask you about your writing process which I was also beaten on. I've seen your movie (awesome) and you talk about telling jokes that you've made up earlier that day. Do you just use stuff as you think of it? And basically what HeadEgg said. Another thing I learned from watching your movie is that you have a pretty funny job and life and friends. Good going.

July 27, 2008, 5:41 PM
yes, ff, things are pretty good right now. i was did a guest set in the CoC show in san diego last night. boy was that fun. maria, brian, patton, a video from zach - all hilarious. the human giant guys and sarah silverman added to the comedy joyessness.
anyway ff and headegg (do you have an angry inch?), i write jokes for Best Week Ever every week, jokes for my blog (almost) every day, and jokes for various other projects, some of which ends up in my stage act, but the stand-up is mostly created on stage. i don't have a writing regimen because with interviews and auditions and traveling to gigs, my schedule changes daily, so there is no specific time i could set aside to write regularly.

Great record, man. God dammit that lawyer bit is excellent. AST Records is killin' it, yo.
I know this has been said before, and your reasoning against it was perfectly valid, but I'm a douchebag. I can't help myself. If nothing else, this post will prevent the next jerk who didn't see the old thread from saying this:
For some reason, compared to its first incarnation, I'm really feeling the time constraint on I Love Movies. Part of it is that the past couple have had two guests, I'm sure. And (god help me for saying this) part of the problem might be resolved by a slight reduction in the weed department...
I just want to sort of cast another vote for a 60 minute show. This last one felt especially rushed. No time for Maltin! It's not only that I selfishly want more hot shit to listen to, I feel like having an hour would be good for the flow. I wanted to hear you and Hardwick go back and forth a little more with Odenkirk.
I'm guessing you probably agree somewhat, and it's those damned circumstances who are fucking everything up. You need asses in seats. Personally, I'd stick around the UCB all night for those shows. Four hours vs four and a half, what's the difference? But since I don't live in LA who gives a shit what I would do?
Anyway. I know you're a busy dude, and I'm not complaining, I still love the podcast. Sorry my feedback is so long-winded.

I love movies is the most dissapointing podcast ever, but in a good way.
It's just so damn short! Honestly, when the Odenkirk/Hardwick episode ended, I thought I had sat on my ipod and skipped it ahead 30 minutes. There wasn't even any Maltin Game!!
As I said, though, it's a compliment. If it sucked, I wouldn't care how long it was.

thanks, and i'll pledge to not be high for the next show, although i thought, since hardwick and odenkirk weren't stoned, the last one ended up being pretty good. i've got an excellent guest lined up for the next episode. such a good guest that i might not line up another one, and the entire show can be dedicated to whether or not he/she'll be able to walk again.

I've been kicking around my city doing small shows in bars and coffee houses for a little while now. I now feel the need to get going in clubs. Is there a way around bringers? I just don't have the friend power to be able to bring 7-10 people to pay for every show I do for god knows how long. Clubs are a necessity correct?

dougbenson
July 30, 2008, 1:19 PM
i'm not an expert on the new york scene, but i assume it's very tough to get into the comedy clubs without doing bringer shows. i'm opposed to that system, but also don't know any way around it (other than getting so funny in the smaller clubs that you get work on television and then the clubs are happy to hire you).
but as long as there's an audience, who cares if it's a club or a coffee house or a crack alley? just do you thing, man! if you are any good, it will all fall into place. and if you suck...leave me alone!

Doug, rumor has it that you will be making a triumphant return to the Pittsburgh area in early September. The wife and I are excited, mostly because we want to laugh, but partially because we want to earn our revenge with a game of "Bags."
My question to you: when you're in Pittsamaburgh, you're doing Thursday - Saturday. Which is the best show to see (besides all of 'em)? My initial guess is the very last Saturday show, but I could be completely wrong because I'm just guessing because I'm an ig-nor-ray-moose.
And while you're in town, please indulge in a trip to the Strip District for some Pittsburgh Popcorn Company Peanut Butter and Chocolate Kettle Corn. It's a stoner's delight, my friend. You will not be disappointed! Their menu ... it's the best ... it's more crack-like than KFC chicken skin.

dougbenson
August 11, 2008, 6:31 AM
the short answer: don't do it unless you love it.
the not-as-short-but-still-pretty-short answer: get on stage as often as possible, and listen to advice but only take the advice you like, because it's your act and being able to do whaatever you want (as long as audiences enjoy it, of course) is one of the best reasons to get into stand-up.
Darryl
August 11, 2008, 6:44 AM
It helps to have some kind of psychological trauma that you need to work out by seeking acceptance through an audience. So, if you haven't been traumatized, you might want to work on that part first. Get adopted by abusive parents, go back to school and annoy people until they beat the shit out of you on a daily basis, or become an alter boy in a catholic church. The rest is gravy!
(Note: above opinion is given by rudely answering a question meant for Doug Benson, and given by a person who has no clue what he is talking about. Mostly.)

Hey Doug, I finally saw Super High Me last night, and like pretty much everyone else, I liked it more than I expected to. And I expected to like it. The music and the direction was surprisingly good, plus there was some very good footage of you, with jokes that I had not heard before.
Anyway, I noticed that Super High Me is currently the 11th most instantly viewed disc on Netflix for the last three months, and 10th in the last week. Is that a pleasant surprise, or were you expecting it to be that popular? Has its success had a noticeable impact on the size of your crowds (or in any other way)?
Either way, congrats.
PS I did not see a new Super High Me thread, so I put this here. I hope to not be sent to some sort of AST Gulag for being so presumptuous.

it's a pleasant surprise, considering how underpromoted (or not promoted at all, actually) the movie has been. but i always felt the subject matter, whether you are familar with my stand-up or not, was something people would be interested in if they heard about it. (blockbuster says the movie has "overperformed by 87%," whatever that means.) every show i do now, there are lots of people in the crowd who have seen the movie, but i'm not packing places because a lot of the folks who enjoy the film never leave their houses.

I think you're right about the subject matter. I was just at a wedding and mentioned Super High Me to a handful of friends, and all but one had heard of it, and most had already seen it. They know absolutely nothing about comedy, but lots about weed.
Anyway, I hope you're making some money off of the dvd's "overperformance," one way or another. I would like to see you lighting a blunt off a $100 bill in Super High Me 2 (Your Sister is a Werewolf).
And since you love movies: is the Howling 2 the worst sequel ever made? Worst movie ever made? I can't think of anything worse, despite the fact that I had Sybil Danning from that movie in my wank bank for the entire duration of my adolescence.
EDIT: I also wanted to add that whoever chose the stand-up material for the dvd did an excellent job.

i wanted the seinfeld line on the cd because it's a perfect example of the kind of shit i blurt out in my shows every night and then often forget to ever say again. thanks for liking it.
i got final approval of all the stand-up in the movie, but alex campbell deserves credit for looking at many hours of stand-up and narrowing it down to what you see in the film.

Hey Doug,
Great show tonight in of all places Pleasanton. It was the first comedy show I've ever seen in a 'quote' suburban 'unquote' setting and I have to say, you and Graham completely killed it. You were right to point out that, for a 7pm crowd, with sunlight still streaming in through the blinds, people were much more into it than you or I would've expected.
My wife totally called me out for shaking Graham Elwood's hand after the show and saying, "Bag o' Corn, Friend!". But he seemed to find it funny and she should know by now that I'm a dork. You were super friendly as well and it was great to say 'hey'.
Not sure if I'll ever go back to Tommy T's, but it was certainly educational to watch two super talented dudes take a converted Hungry Hunter restaurant (Doug's observation) in a shitty, pro-Bush, Happy Family, shithole suburb (my observation) and show that bunch of Bachelorette parties and Hummer enthusiasts how it's done....

I hate to sound completely obsequious, but it seems at least a little shitty that you will not see much money from something that is rented and purchased so often, and almost completely on the strength of your performance/idea.
I have not seen The Howling in many years, but I did recently see Wolfen. It does not hold up. At all. Now Looker on the other hand ... (are we in the "Albert Finney Movies from the Early '80s" thread?)

Do you have any idea/say in what the stage decor will be for the CC taping? The last one was a carnival, wasn't it? I don't think they get too elaborate at the Hudson; everyone pretty much has screen pics behind them.
dougbenson
August 20, 2008, 3:01 PM
i wanted roller coasters in the background for the first one, like a big amusement park, and they came back with "how 'bout a carnival basketball game?" i said sure, because this was one day before the taping and it was too late to change to something else. but i liked how colorful it was and getting to (attempt) to shoot a basket at the end of my set.
this year, since it's my second CCP and they won't let you put your own name up behind you anymore (DOUG!), i asked for a big #2. we'll see what they show me 24 hours before the taping.

I hadn't read this thread in a while and someone brought up something I've been meaning to ask about. Why did you choose to omit the segues bit on the CD? My wife and I first saw you at the Mitch Hedberg tribute show a couple years back and didn't really know who you were (other than I Love Movies on bobanddavid.com) so we didn't know what to expect. When you did the segues thing I laughed so hard I was completely winded. True story. Anyways, still love the CD just wanted to be able to share those segues with my children someday.... or something.
Also, speaking of my first experience with your material, you had a line in your Vanilla Sky review about how Penelope Cruz couldn't make the line I would like a sandwich sound believable if she were starving in the desert and a guy with a sandwich cart walked by. Still one of the best lines I've ever read. Kudos to you, sir.

i didn't do the segues bit on the cd because i did it on LCS and my first CCP, so i figured a lot of people had heard it already. but i'll try to get it on my next cd, if that will make you happy.

Doug or anybody else: What exactly is the schedule for "I Love Movies" at the UCB Theater? Or: If I'm planning a trip to L.A. for late October and I wanna be in town to see I Love Movies, when would be my best bet? My apologies if the answer for this is somewhere in this thread!

Doug! If you're a fan of the Once soundtrack, I heartily recommend Glen Hansard's band, The Frames. Their best albums are Burn the Maps, Dance the Devil Back Into His Hole, and For the Birds. Great stuff, well worth spending some of that fat record loot.

I think the last time Hardwick showed Xanadu was for the Chick Flick

I am traumatized now. Oh it is so very horrible.
When we first got HBO they played Xanadu, like, fiftily-bzillion times a day* I was so torn, HBO - yay! Xanadu - ugh!
Now I have the goddam theme song in my head.

i had a great time and i hope the audience did too. for those of you who missed it (and give a shit about what happened), david huntsberger showed a scene from a german movie called VITUS, paul scheer showed a musical number from THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER, sean cullen (who wasn't clear about the night's theme) gave us a sampling of THE TEN COMMANDEMENTS that did in fact feature some dancing (and strange attempts to tear women apart), chris hardwick brought yet another clip from XANADU and my clip was from SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND.

Doug, great show last night. We had a great time. Great. I have to remember to not get super high and drunk until AFTER I say hi to you. Woof. I think I actually told you "goodnight" before your set. I kind of hate coming up to a comedian because I instantly feel like I have to prove that I'm not crazy, and I always come off crazy.
Anyways, thanks for coming to Minneapolis.

Reading your blog post about the roast makes me hope that some video will eventually hit youtube or something. Plus it brings up a few questions.
When you said, “I didn't see AMERICAN HISTORY X because I didn't see AMERICAN HISTORY I - VIIII.” Did you say “American History 1 through 9,” or “American History eye through Vee-eye-eye-eye-eye”?
<O:p</O:p
Also, which joke got the biggest laugh? And, did any jokes make everyone groan instead of laughing?
<O:p</O:p

said "one through nine." but when writing it out, i thought the joke played better with the roman numerals. (which i got wrong, i think. 9 = IX if i'm not mistaken.)
that joke got a good laugh. i said the whole string of movie jokes without really pausing in between each one and the audience kind of forced their laughter in on that one.
the biggest laugh of my "set" (for lack of a better word) was the wolfgang puck comment. so on the nose, and yet perfectly hilarious. but i would laugh at any sentence that ends with "the shitter."
steve tisch had a great sense of humor about the whole thing. every person on the dais was either a friend or a complete stranger, so there were no shots taken at me. i don't think it was recorded in any way. not even a cell phone camera, because rich people don't post things on YouTube.

This is so damn true. I think there should be an entire thread where comedians describe the weirdest thing that a nervous comedy nerd ever said to them before or after a set.
I remember once going up to Eugene Mirman before a show and wanting to tell him how great his two CDs were, but it came out as, "Nnnnuuuuhhjjjjllluuuuuuuuphhhh...." and then I passed out into the coat check.
Good night.

PS--Hey Doug... So as not to threadjack unnecessarily: Have you ever willingly and earnestly competed in a comedy competition? And, if so, which one, when, how did it go...and are there any hilarious stories to share with us?
dougbenson
September 20, 2008, 1:24 PM
well, aside from televised competitions like LCS and STAR SEARCH, i've been in just a few comedy contests. there was the s.f. comedy competition, which i did many years ago and did not fare well in (margret cho was in the same year, and my favorite competitor, peter gualke, did even worse than me, finishing 19th or 20th each night), the colorado comedy competition that i did a few years later and fared only slightly better in (greg behrendt and chris titus were amongst the field in the soon to be defunct contest) and i did pretty well in the johnny walker competition that was held for a few years in improv comedy clubs around the country (i never won an event, but i was runner-up in several of them). but the crown jewel in my competition crown was my win in the virgin airlines comedy competition, the semis of which were held in the daylight outdoors in a park in costa mesa, and the finals of which were in the more appropriate improv in irvine (a great club that moved a few years ago to its current location, which is slightly less great, but still a nice place to play). the judges of the finals were an interesting bunch - budd friedman, rita rudner, richard belzer, paul provenza, "weird" al yankovich and woody harrelson. i've got a pitcure of myself with that unusual group that i would share with you if i didn't look like such a dork (and if i could find it).
the prize for this competition was a trip for two to the uk, the chance to perform three paid sets at the comedy store in london (two out of three went well) and a gig performing on the plane on the way back to the states. which was weird because with multiple cabins there was no place that i could stand and be seen by more than 20 poeple at a time, and most of the passengers had their sleep masks on anyway. so i walked around the plane doing close-up comedy, and it was very lame. i didn't feel like a winner at all.
