How dare you say that the Otago Millionaires Club (How Bizarre...) came out of nowhere. They're Maori gangstas from Southern New Zealand.
Have we got an artist/title for the song that brings bad luck yet. I'm usually really good at that kind of stuff and it totally stumped me. Of course, now I can't get it out of my head...
What's even worse is that the version in my head only has about 10% correct lyrics. The rest I've had to make up. "You can choke on a rind, and then mess with my mind....etc."

from dana gould's myspace blog some time back (excerpted):
To the Valley (!), where we found ourselves clomping through what the pamphlet described as, "a roomy two-story ranch house in a quiet woodsy setting". To our astonishment, it turned out to be a roomy two-story ranch house in a quiet, woodsy setting. It was perfect. It was also at the upper ceiling of our price range. In fact, it climbed up to the rafters, burst through the ceiling, and was up on the roof scaling the chimney of our price range. We were about to excuse ourselves, fake smiles affixed, when the realtor tossed ten seemingly-innocent words our way. "The house used to belong to that actor, Roddy McDowall."
Our heads swiveled around like two barn owls gliding past a field mouse get-to-know-you grooming party.
"You know him," the realtor continued, "he was a child actor in the forties and then went on to be in those ape movies."
"Yes. Those ape movies," I huffed. "Those silly, little inconsequential apes movies! Excuse me."
My wife followed me outside.
"It's a good thing it's perfect, 'cause I guess we're buying it," she said.
"We can't. No one will believe this was a coincidence! People will think I'm really nuts." An arched eyebrow from my beloved assured me I had cashed the "not-a-nut" chit a long time ago. You see, my friends do think I'm a bit of a nut. A Planet Of The Apes nut, specifically.
...
Over the years, my obsession with these movies became something of a running joke amongst with my friends, an inextricable aspect of my personality, a surefire deal-closer when trying to score with the ladies (one of these statements is false, can you find it?), but who would believe that I bought Roddy McDowall's house by chance? To the casual observer, it would look like a grotesque attempt by an overzealous fan to obtain the ultimate collectible, a veritable orgasm of fiscal recklessness.

So this is how I managed to get onto the Primo:
Paypal doesn't recognize Pakistan as a country (no worries, we don't recognize Israel, so fair is fair). As such I couldn't pay for the Primo.
So what I did was I did a week of stand-up shows in Second Life. A show a day at clubs all over the virtual world. That way I earned enough Linden Dollars (the in-world currency) to make the equivalent of $20.00. (Exchange rate is L$270 = $1). I then transferred that money to a comedian from Canada who performs with me in-world, convincing him this wasn't some Nigerian spam-scam (you remember Nigerian Spam Scan? They opened for the Kenyan Philharmonic Orchestra on Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday festivities). He then paid the Primo paypal amount for me and gave me the password so I could subscribe.
That was a week ago. Best 20 bucks I ever spent (although if the wife finds out I spent 20 U.S. Dollars on a podcast she will murder me).
Jimmy, Matt, Third Chair. You guys are worth it.

I noticed my iTunes timed out this morning when it searched NNF Primo for new content. I believe their host is having issues beyond NNF's control. Podbean.com itself seems to be down. I'm sure it will be fixed soon, but if it's not ready tomorrow morning for my Thursday commute I will find a way to get over it. I don't think any of the season 2 episodes are downloadable, but they can be listened to online via Quicktime.
The link you posted takes me to the correct page to listen to the podcast on the page. Are you able to see the graphic? Can you click the "play" button under the graphic? If not, you may need to install the Quicktime software from Apple. It's a free download.
Also, Matt says that all of Season 2 will be made available as a paid download. Good thing, since I deleted those episodes to make room for web design client files. Stupid.

Agreed! Matt is great. I've been listening to the old Season One episodes, and they are just as funny as the first time around. The great part about re-listening is that someitmes Matt's best lines are easy to miss, delicate flower that he is. A second listen brings him out in all his hysterical glory.
My favorite Matt line from Ep 318: "Did you see that movie where a bunch of different actors played CC DeVille?"

I liked this episode too. Always fun to have a first-timer on.
Although I was disappointed to hear the talk about the New Yorker cover. I can understand if you think it's not funny (not that I think it's really meant to elicit LOLs), but the best satire always has the potential to confuse. Dan "Tom Tomorrow" Perkins seems to be one of the few libby bloggers I've seen who agrees with me. (http://thismodernworld.com/4402)
Berliner
July 17, 2008, 1:52 PM
I think there is a difference that I can't really put into words between that Tom Tomorrow cartoon and the one in the New Yorker.
I think if you were to show that first Tom Tomorrow cartoon without context to a random person, then asked if it sounded like it was insulting Bush's point of view or praising it, I think most people would be able to recognize that it was insulting.
But if you showed people that New Yorker cartoon, I'm not so sure they would be able to say it came from someone who was trying to skewer that image of Obama, rather than supporting it. I don't have a problem with the satire, I just am not so sure its that effective as satire.
aenemaTron
July 17, 2008, 2:01 PM
I guess it's true that people are so fucking deranged that even that image is not silly enough to be effective satire. But people saying it's "racist" (huh?) or that it might somehow hurt the campaign, those people I think are just wrong.

I know 55% of our nation is stupid hicks who think Obama is the dark anti-christ prince of Islam, but I bet you not one of them accidentally saw The New Yorker out of the corner of their eye. Those folks don't wander into "cities" where the magazine goes on sale. What, do they think a JPG will get forwarded around with the magazine title photoshopped out, saying "Check out the family portrait Obama commissioned!" Come on.
That cover did not confuse the 1200 effete liberals who accidentally read The New Yorker.

The experience in GTA is a little off. The routine that I saw in the game was from his Fame special (and, from what I've heard, was part of his US shows). WHile I enjoyed watching the actual special, the GTA performance was stilted and subdued. The fake audience laughter didn't help matters.

I took Greg's advice and started reading "The Way You Wear Your Hat: Frank Sinatra and the Lost Art of Livin'". I'm only a few chapters in, but it is fantastic!
Here's a piece of a letter he wrote to the LA Times regarding an article about George Michael being a reluctant pop star:
"Come on, George. Loosen up. Swing, man. Dust off those gossamer wings and fly yourself to the moon of your choice and be grateful to carry the baggage we've all had to carry since those lean nights of sleeping on buses and helping the driver unload the instruments.
And no more of that talk about the ''tragedy of fame.'' The tragedy of fame is when no one shows up and you're singing to the cleaning lady in some empty joint that hasn't seen a paying customer since St. Swithin's Day."
The book is filled with great stuff like that.

Matt referred to it as "A Gentleman Gets Dressed," and this is called "A Gentleman Gets Dressed Up." I can't imagine that it's not the same book.
Ten bucks, Matt! Now you can afford to buy it for Jimmy next birthday. I think there's still time to get it delivered!

In a strange dicotomy, I went to Threadless and bought a couple shirts. But at the same time I want to read the Sinatra style book.
I think the book Behrendt spoke of seems more palatable than the others on this thread. Something about a book thats about nothing but classic men's style with no other story or humor makes me uneasy.

Going back to season 1 I believe, Jimmy, Matt, and the former third baseman made a dead pool contest. Did someone, Matt maybe, pick Estelle Getty? God rest her soul today. Or I may be having an Alzheimer's moment.

Sadly in episode 56 Jimmy picked Ms. Getty to pass before Matt's pick of Andy Grittith, Mike had Mike Tyson and Scott Ackerman had Courtney Love (Or did he change to Dick Van Dyke? It wasn't real clear.). But Jimmy did state that this dead pool was for 2007, does he still get the $40.00?
So long to a fine actress!

A. Bart Giamatti is who you were looking for (Paul's dad).
not named after him, but here is what jimmy was probably thinking of:
"On October 14, 1989, before Game 1 at the World Series, Giamatti—to whom this World Series was dedicated—was memorialized with a moment of silence. Son Marcus Giamatti threw out the first pitch before the game. That World Series featured the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's, a "subway series" for Bay Area fans who, fittingly, used the BART - the Bay Area Rapid Transit system - to commute to games."

Seems like there are people who have Andrew Koenig's view of public transportation no matter how good the local system is.
Also, the one thing thats great about a lake or a river that wasn't mentioned is that usually there is a great spot on a lake where you can swim and its just you and your friends. Most of the beaches I've been to or good ocean spots are really crowded. For me that pushes lakes ahead of oceans.

("Hey, Pardo! Is Cetera still with Chicago?")
Oh man.. now I have to think of the Ultimate Stupid Question, combine all the cliched questions into one..
"Hey Jimmy, how did Peter Cetera's departure from Chicago effect your routine? How did you get started in comedy with so much sadness over Cetera's premature exit and subsequent decline in overall quality of the band?"
Actually, as someone who according to the iTunes has listened to Chicago 16 fourty seven times straight through (and other songs more then that) I think my shit tastes in music eclipses even Jimmy's. I would want 20 minutes just to chat about Chicago, since I'm sure he is just an encyclopedia of information and opinions on them..
Also, I'm curious as to how he came to be familiar with Opeth. I know he is into prog rock, and Opeth are certainly progressive, but their death metal leanings seemingly would put Pardo off..

Okay, confession time..
I am probably the most pathetic NNF fan here.
Like a lonely dog, I put on random NNF episodes (I have every one, bought and paid for!) when there is no noise around me as company. Though in my defense I am one of those kids who was raised by television and latch key. I also put NNF on as I sleep, because I need talk radio (NPR works as well, but I get interested in the stories and can't sleep) or similarly droll audio that I can ignore. It serves to help me sleep with my tinnitus, otherwise I can't stop thinking about the ringing in my ear. If I can't think of something to listen to out of the 11,000 plus in 700 some albums by 400 some artists, I just put on an episode of NNF and smile.
I was going to fly into California from their northern neighbor to see the 100th episode, but I wasn't chosen :(
Every time a friend tells me they listen to podcasts, I tell them about NNF and demand they listen to an episode I choose carefully based on their tastes. For example, a friend of mine who is into Radiohead and an Apple dork I recommended episode 224 (guest Chris Hardwick). Another friend who is a metalhead I pointed towards 311 because of Jimmy's review of the Iron Maiden concert.
I've always enjoyed Chicago's ballady Foster-driven Cet-era of 16-17 from the 80's having grown up during that era of their career but it wasn't until NNF and Jimmy's constant banter about Chicago that I went and bought all the old LP's at my local vinyl specialty shop and stole them from the internets as well so I may listen to them on the go.
I even fucking switched to Coke Black. EDIT: Whoops, I meant Coke Zero, not that coffee/coke abomination.. but I wonder if Pardo ever tried that..

If I've heard all the new episodes of my other podcasts, I always go back to NNF. And it's funny every time, even if I've heard the episode several times. I listen in the car, and at home. I am admittedly addicted. (By the way, Jordan Jesse Go! has good repeat-listening quality for me as well.)
So, keep up the good work, Pardo and Co!

That was a really fantastic episode... I particularly liked Jimmy's bizarre insistence that BART was named after former MLB commissioner A. Bartlett Giammatti. Also Matt's joke about what a kid's idea is, and Elwood's capper about the jism.
I think Jimmy was "misremembering" something Doug Benson said in a previous Podcast. I don't think it was about BART.

I still have some hope in my mind that Andy Daly will give up the hosting spot of Match Game and the producers will slot Pardo in.. Or at the very least let Pardo be a panel member, if he doesn't outshine everyone else too hard anyways.. I'd love to see the casual inside jabs that Pardo and Daly would shoot at each other about the hosting gig..

As far as live action goes... The Dark Knight is the best. Conroy has the luxury of only acting with his voice while Bale has to be the whole package. I loved Bale's voice. He's trying to strike fear into criminals while protecting his identity. I am now even gayer than I was when I woke up this morning.

For the people bagging on Bale's voice as the Batman. I ask this: How many people thought "Why is Batman using such a lame voice" and how many thought "Why is Christian Bale talking like that"?
As someone who EASILY loses suspension of disbelief at movies by the lame-ass shit most films pull, I never for one second questioned the actor's choice because the mofo IS BATMAN. I did think huh, that must be hard on the ol' bat-larynx though.

Not only is Strange Brew not a terrible movie, it is in my opinion, one of the greatest movies of all time.
I could bore you with the hundred or so quotes from this movie that I still use on a daily basis, but instead I'll just pick out one of my favorite scenes from when Paul Dooley (in his bestest performance ever) is purgering in court:
Dooley: As you can see, these videos have time code, and those are very difficult to fake.
Attorney: Can you please explain to the court, Time code?
Dooley: Just cause I don't know what it is doesn't mean I'm lying...

Couple of notes regarding this episode:
I once saw Pierce Brosnan at the baggage area at LAX. It was one of the only times in my life I've been taken aback by someone's looks in person. He exudes "star."
In high school I knew a blowhard junior golfer who very sincerely got the vanity plate, FUTR PGA.
Matt's eating habits don't make sense. From knowing him personally, I get the sense he's sort of a picky eater, but then he reveals he'll eat a sandwich from 7-11? I don't understand. Either have some standards or don't!
isoS
August 7, 2008, 11:49 AM
I am picky, but I have low standards. If the 7-11 sandwich had tomatoes on it, I would've never eaten it. But it was literally just turkey and cheese on white bread, no condiments even (I guess you could add those yourself). To me, the simplicity of it negated the possible health risk. Also, I wanted an actual lunch, not just some chips or a donut, and that was one of the healthiest "real lunch" items I could find in the store.

Yeah, you can hardly go wrong when you bind lunch meat to bread with cheese! Bring it on! It's when you start adding stuff that can go bad and get mushy that the problems set in.
Also: I was in total crossword geek heaven with this one! I swear, I love any time Pardo wants to talk about crosswords. But this little chat knocked it out of the park. Finally, someone understands! I try to explain what is clever and/or annoying about crosswords, especially the ones from Shortz, and I get glazed looks. Yes, I watched the Wordplay movie. Several times. Careful, once you add cheese that's when it starts to get mushy - that cheese, for some reason, starts to melt itself to the bread and meat and turns almost liquidy if you wait too long. Yuck.

I have ENORMOUS BALLS then.
Never had a problem, but I always check to make sure the 'fridges are cold and look at the expiration date on the sandwich. The only times I've had violent food poisoning so far is from Naugles and Jack in the Box - never from the triangle. I did however get a moldy-ass burrito out of a vending machine when I was at college. That was sadmaking.
