ASPECIALTHING RECORDS is proud to present the debut solo CD from Mr. Doug Benson!
<img width=475 src=http://aspecialthing.com/images/DB_cover_web.jpg> (http://www.aspecialthing.com/store/index.htm)
Whether you know him from VH1's "Best Week Ever," NBC's "Last Comic Standing" or his documentary "Super High Me," chances are Doug Benson has made you laugh before. Now he will make you laugh again, repeatedly, with his first full-length solo comedy album, "Doug Benson: Professional Humoredian." Recorded live at the world-famous Hollywood Improv, "Professional Humoredian" catches Doug at his loosest, silliest and most hilarious. Playing to a rowdy sold-out house on 4/20, Doug tears through his set with wild abandon, delivering material on such wide-ranging topics as movies, politics, relationships, anti-drug campaigns and the miracle of modern science known as McGriddles. A perennial favorite among comedy aficionados, Doug placed sixth on Season Five of "Last Comic Standing" and was named "Stoner of the Year" by High Times Magazine in 2006. Patton Oswalt calls him "prolific ... a resin-scented miracle." One listen and you'll understand why Doug has won such acclaim: witty, charming, relentless and irrepressible, Doug Benson is a Professional Humoredian.
DOUG BENSON: PROFESSIONAL HUMOREDIAN will be released on July 15th. Come celebrate the occasion at a very special Comedy Death Ray (http://aspecialthing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=238) that night!

finally got a chance to listen to this today. it's so great. doug plays perfectly to both audiences the live audience and the cd listener. so many asides and riffs add a lot to the album. i really think this is about as good as a comedy album can get. i'm gonna pull a quote from the q&a threadt cause it sums it up, and doug's description matches the goal of AST Records perfectly.
the CD is meant to be an example of my headliner set that i was doing in comedy clubs at the time of the taping, april 20, 2008, so as such, i wanted to leave in some flaws, and some riffs that might not ever be uttered by me again. as a writer in a publication i can't recall the name of said about my style, "he has a penchant for dicking around."

This Album is incredible. I have to listen a few more times but I personal feel it will be one of my all time favorites.
Now for the question...
How far does the material on this album go back? Do you still have things in your act that you wrote in lets say your first 5 years of comedy or is most of your act recently written jokes?
(I am specifically talking about the album so I posed the Q here rather than the Q&A thread..sorry if this annoys anyone)

I predict that I will enjoy this Compact Disc as I find that the humor of Doug Benson is quite amusing. I didn't read the other pages in this thread so if this is about bashing the new album then pretend I wrote the phrases "will not enjoy", "do not find", and "quite unamusing" above.

i think everything from my first five years of comedy is gone from the act at this point. there's a couple bits on the cd that are pretty old, but most of it is from the last three or four years. i think. i'm bad at keeping track of this shit.

If I'm not mistaken, the closing joke* is a Benson "classic" from days of yore (not sure how old, but I remember hearing it back when I first saw Doug at M Bar in the early days of CDR).
* smoking in the car, flick cigarette out the window, etc.
dougbenson
July 31, 2008, 10:00 PM
yeah, that joke is pretty old - but with the newer "i'm trying to do observational material" set-up - but the t-minus bit is absolutely the oldest bit on the recording. for some reason audiences have consistently enjoyed that joke for what could be a decade or more, so it's hard to drop it from the act because it's so reliable.
