I did! I made a thread for this movie back on the old board.

It looks like it's coming out in 4 theaters on Friday. I don't think that even qualifies as a "limited" release. That's like "It's Pat" level.
Look for it on DVD in a month probably.

Is the "it's" instead of "its" in the thread title an homage to a misspelling in the title of the original thread, a la Doug Benson's "Theadt"? If it is, by all means leave it, but if it's not, can we change it to "its", please? I'm not calling anyone out, but it bugs me. My problem, I know.

It was previously mentioned that Mike White had finished and turned in the script for a School of Rock sequel. It sounds like Paramount Pictures liked what they saw.

According to Variety, the studio is moving forward with the sequel that has Jack Black attached to reprise his role as rock star wannabe/substitute teacher Dewey Finn. Richard Linklater is attached to direct again, and Scott Rudin is returning as producer.

The follow-up,titled School of Rock 2: America Rocks, picks up with Finn leading a group of summer school students on a cross-country field trip that delves into the history of rock 'n' roll and explores the roots of blues, rap, country and other genres.

The original was a box office hit for the studio, costing just $30 million to make and earning $131 million worldwide.

FUNNY FOURSOME JOINS "MADtv" FOR 14TH SEASON PREMIERING SEPT. 13 ON FOX

Erica Ash, Matt Braunger, Eric Price and Lauren Pritchard Join Cast

MADtv welcomes new cast members Erica Ash, Matt Braunger, Eric Price and Lauren Pritchard for the 14th season of the Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy series premiering Saturday, Sept. 13 (11:00 PM-Midnight ET/PT) on FOX. The new cast will join returning cast members Bobby Lee, Nicole Parker, Keegan-Michael Key, Crista Flanagan, Arden Myrin and Johnny Sanchez to continue MADtv's hilarious late-night pop culture parodies and politically incorrect humor.

In the upcoming season, MADtv returns with more wall-to-wall spoofs of popular music, movies and television including Bobby Lee's "24" parodies and, just in time for the election, Keegan-Michael Key's popular "FAUXBAMA" sketches. MADtv will also continue to step out of the theater for new sketches shot on the streets of Los Angeles.

Erica Ash, born and raised an Army brat, claims Atlanta as her home. Ash climbed the entertainment ladder by landing roles on the cable series "The Big Gay Sketch Show" and in the Las Vegas production of the hit musical "Spamalot."

Matt Braunger was raised in Portland, OR, and has been a featured performer at the Just For Laughs Festival and South By Southwest. He also recently won "Best of the Fest" at the inaugural Rooftop Comedy Festival in Aspen.

Eric Price, a Milwaukee native, performed in over 500 shows a year before getting his big break on the cable series "Reno 911!."

As a teenager, Lauren Pritchard studied improv at the SAK Theater in her hometown of Orlando, FL, under teacher Wayne Brady. Pritchard is an alumnus of Disney's "Comedy Warehouse" and has performed with TheatreSports, ACME, iO West and ComedySportz.

MADtv is a production of Quincy Jones David Salzman Entertainment. The executive producers are David Salzman, Quincy Jones and John Crane.

I'm really surprised MAD TV is still limping along. The show doesn't seem to get much respect from the people that run it, at least from my perspective.

I caught a couple shows after they retooled it into some weird standup/sketch hybrid.

I miss the days of Will Sasso and Christian Duguay.

Looks pretty nice, huh? I bet if you didn't know LA that well you'd look at that and go hey, that is a pretty cute house and it's got a porch and a second floor and everything. Well scroll down to the Google Street View picture and turn around. Across from a police station? Oh, well, that's safe right? Now turn back around and click North until you get to the corner.

Variety says that Fox Atomic has acquired Accidentes, a pitch that Sacha Baron Cohen will produce with an eye toward starring in it as an ambulance-chasing personal injury lawyer.

The comedy will be written by Peter Baynham, who with Baron Cohen and others shared an Oscar nomination for scripting the 20th Century Fox comedy Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

The protagonist will be a lawyer of Latin descent who transforms from contingency attorney to hero of the working class when he helps an immigrant win a judgment against his wealthy employer after a landscaping mishap. He also becomes the enemy of L.A.'s power elite.

--------

Michael Vartan and David Cross will play bitter tire store rivals in the comedy Demoted for Parallel Media's new genre arm Parallel Zide, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Vartan will play Rodney McAdams, a hotshot Treadline Tires sales associate who delights in tormenting his less-than-cool colleague, Ken (Cross). But when their boss suddenly dies, Ken is promoted and assigns Rodney to a secretarial job as payback, giving the male chauvinist a taste of his own medicine.

J.B. Rogers (American Pie 2) will direct from a screenplay by Dan Callahan. Warren Zide (Final Destination) will produce through Parallel Zide. Ryan Lewis is executive producing the feature, which begins production Sept. 2 in Michigan.

From the New York Times: (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/22/arts/22arts-EBERTANDROEP_BRF.html?ref=arts)

Neither Richard Roeper, near right, nor Roger Ebert, far right, will return to their nationally syndicated movie review show, "At the Movies With Ebert & Roeper," next season. In a statement Monday Mr. Ebert wrote: "After 33 years on the air, 23 of them with Disney, the studio has decided to take the program named 'Siskel & Ebert' and then 'Ebert & Roeper' in a new direction. I will no longer be associated with it." Also on Monday The Associated Press reported that after eight seasons, Mr. Roeper, a columnist for The Chicago Sun-Times, would leave the show. Mr. Roeper said in a statement that he and Disney-ABC Domestic Television had failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Mr. Roeper also said he planned to continue as a host of a movie review show elsewhere, but did not disclose details. His last appearance will be for the weekend of Aug. 16. Mr. Ebert has been on leave from "At the Movies" for the last two years because of health problems, but he said in his statement that the trademark for the program, which he began with the critic Gene Siskel in 1975 as "Sneak Previews" on PBS, "still belongs to me and Marlene Iglitzen, Gene’s widow, and the thumbs will return." A Disney spokesman wasn’t available for comment, The Associated Press said.

"Bear City" Feature Film Planned (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080724h.php)

"Harold" director T. Sean Shannon has revealed plans for a film adaptation of the Saturday Night Live shorts series "Bear City" which he directed.

Talking with Armstrong Interviews (http://armstronginterviews.com/2008/t-sean-shannon-talks-harold-bear-city/), he revealed that "I'm doing a Bear City movie. I've written one. Hopefully, I'm going to shoot it this fall in Chicago. In the movie, the bears kidnap Fred Willard and make him do voice-over."

He also confirms they're definitely going for a theatrical release with the film. Shannon shot fifteen short films in total, all of which can be found at BearBearCity.com (http://www.bearbearcity.com/).

The premise is that a biological attack on a town (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080724h.php#) forces the humans underground, but also turns bears into sentient human-like beings who within two weeks are going around doing the daily lives that most humans do.

Many Bennigan's restaurants in Chicago and across the country abruptly closed Tuesday (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-bennigans-jul29,0,5083111.story) after the company that owns the chain filed for bankruptcy.

Two quotes:
An American said this: "Wow," he said wide-eyed as he peeked into the empty restaurant.

A Canadian said this: "This is highly unusual," Gerald O'Boyle said as he stood outside the closed restaurant. "I just can't fathom it."

I was clicking around on MySpace and got to a page by Dan Harmon, a person I am not familiar with, but who some of you might be (he has worked as head writer on the Sarah Silverman show, among other things).

I read this blog entry:
http://tinyurl.com/5h5hsz
which really bummed me out.

I don't know Mr. Harmon, and I don't know Beau Brooks, but I have posted a couple comments like Mr. Brooks in the past (I'm talking about his initial comment about Briscoe).

People join groups for a variety of reasons. I have to admit, when I first joined AST it was primarily for the opportunity to interact with some of the comedians I admire. I left what I thought was an innocuous comment on Patton's Q&A Thread, and got a terse putdown by Tron in response. Reflecting on it, it was a Beau Brooks kinda comment that I made, and maybe I deserved the little smackdown I got (but ooooooh, his comment still madea me so maaaaaad). I don't know.

After a several month hiatus (not due to Tron's comment), I came back to AST, I think (or hope) for better reasons, more connected to joining a community of people who enthusiastically share some of my interests, rather than some kind of starfuckerishness.

I don't know, perhaps this is some stupid online diary crap I am foisting upon this thread. I find the interaction with Harmon and Brooks (a comedy guy and his fan) fascinating, and ultimately depressing (Mr. Harmon's MySpace page title *is* called unspeakablesadness, so maybe I should not be surprised).

I thought it was worth reading, as I am really interested in how people connect (the recent Wall-E crying girl and the folks at Pixar) or don't connect (here). I wouldn't share it if I didn't think there was something thoughtful and deep in the tangle of words.

And if you don't like it, go fuck yourself, etc., etc., etc.

Hmm, if this is the Rogan/Kid exchange you were talking about, I don't feel so bad about my post -- it's a little different, in my opinion.

If Kevin is the "Black Belt Kid", he just seems like a guy who doesn't like Rogan and just wants to get into a fight with the man. Mission accomplished.

I don't see Brooks as trying to start a fight with Harmon, though not having seen your previous discussion maybe you touched on this kind of comic/fan interaction already.

One more stupid thing about the Dan Harmon blog entry.

Rather than posting about it here, I was originally going to leave some sort of comment on his Beau Brooks post (something about how the whole thing was very depressing to me). However, to do so I would have first had to request to be his friend.

Something about that struck me as funny.

Regarding the Dan Harmon blog, hate to state the obvious but not everyone in the world of entrainment is a happy/fun person. Don't mix the product and the process. Most professional comedians have tremendous emotional issues caused by tons of stuff. And you really might get sick if you saw the proverbial "sausage" being made.

And that's why I think so many comedy pros had issues with Steve Martin's bio Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life (http://www.amazon.com/Born-Standing-Up-Comics-Life/dp/1416553649/). You see—and I hope this isn't a spoiler for anyone out there since it's a half-a-year old at this point—but here's the deep/dark secret about Martin's life and career you get after reading the book: He stopped putting his soul into comedy when he repaired the relationship he had with his father. And he admits most of his career was based on the sad/true cliche of "I'm doing this to get attention from my dad..." So now he is going through the motions, but mainly because he's paid to do so.

Guys who act like Dan are more of the rule than the exception. And I feel sorry for him from a distance. But if I had to work with an asshat—or array of asshats—like that in any way, I wouldn't.

And FWIW, I caught up with someone I know who is still in the biz (at least for the short term) who recently had a kid after decades of saying he wouldn't. So basically when I asked him why he ended up having one he just said: "My work is not going to hug me when I get older; it's a job." Happy he finally figured it out.

As far as Dan's blog goes, I look forward to future blogs from someone who is 35+ and who gets into insulting pissing matches with fans on MySpace despite the fact he's technically in a position of power and shouldn't be that petty. What fun and joy!

Mike Myers has been developing a fourth "Austin Powers" movie for quite a while now. In May of 2007, he said:

"We're developing a fourth [movie], entirely from Dr. Evil's point of view. That is part of what I've been doing in the last little while."

Now, Deadline Hollywood Daily has a few more details on which direction Myers is going:

I'm told that Mike Myers has started writing Austin Powers 4 which will be a homage to his father. "It's very personal with a father and son theme loosely based on his own life," an insider tells me. As Myers has previously said, this fourth installment of the super spy spoof movie series will focus on Austin's arch-villain Dr. Evil, who was based on Blofeld of the Bond films. But what hasn't been known is that the AP4 plot is really about Dr. Evil and his son (introduced already as Scott Evil, played by Seth Green).

The site adds that Myers is co-writing again with Michael McCullers, who collaborated with Myers on the second and third installments.

World's oldest joke traced back to 1900 BC
Fri Aug 1, 2008 12:13am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - The world's oldest recorded joke has been traced back to 1900 BC and suggests toilet humor was as popular with the ancients as it is today.

It is a saying of the Sumerians, who lived in what is now southern Iraq and goes: "Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap."

It heads the world's oldest top 10 joke list published by the University of Wolverhampton Thursday.

A 1600 BC gag about a pharaoh, said to be King Snofru, comes second -- "How do you entertain a bored pharaoh? You sail a boatload of young women dressed only in fishing nets down the Nile and urge the pharaoh to go catch a fish."

The oldest British joke dates back to the 10th Century and reveals the bawdy face of the Anglo-Saxons -- "What hangs at a man's thigh and wants to poke the hole that it's often poked before? Answer: A key."

"Jokes have varied over the years, with some taking the question and answer format while others are witty proverbs or riddles," said the report's writer Dr Paul McDonald, senior lecturer at the university.

"What they all share however, is a willingness to deal with taboos and a degree of rebellion. Modern puns, Essex girl jokes and toilet humor can all be traced back to the very earliest jokes identified in this research."

The study was commissioned by television channel Dave. The top 10 oldest jokes can be viewed at www.dave-tv.co.uk.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are set to play a married couple in Date Night, a 20th Century Fox comedy to be directed by Shawn Levy, reports Variety.

Josh Klausner wrote the script, based on an idea by Levy, whose 21 Laps will produce. The story follows a couple who find their routine date night becomes much more than just dinner and a movie.

The film will begin production next year, with the exact start date predicated on matching a scheduling hiatus from Carell's sitcom "The Office" and Fey's "30 Rock."

Levy, who is shooting Fox's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, intends the film to be his next directing assignment.

Weird. I guess this is a situation like that movie "The Sweetest Thing" where European counties got an extended version of the movie compared to what we got in the US.
(The European version of "The Sweetest Thing" had that "Penis Song" sequence, which was removed for the American theatrical release. When it came out on DVD, it was restored and every time it airs on cable now, they show the DVD version).
I wonder if this means they'll put this scene back in for the unrated DVD.

Simon Pegg has announced on his MySpace page that helmer Greg Mottola (Superbad, upcoming Adventureland) will direct Nick Frost and Pegg's new movie, Paul.

Written by Pegg and Frost, the road movie is about two British comic book geeks that get into an adventure across America.

In related news, Pegg says that he won't be able to star in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, as was previously reported. "Much to our mutual disappointment, I won't be appearing in QT's forthcoming 'Inglorious Bastards' due to insurmountable scheduling difficulties," he said. "We really tried to make it work but in the end, it just was not possible without severe ramifications elsewhere. I'm trying to remain upbeat, as Tom Selleck said 'Who the hell is Indiana Jones anyway?'"

Regarding "Bastards," Ain't It Cool News adds that former "Freaks and Geeks" star Samm Levine will play one of Brad Pitt's underlings, while David Krumholtz won't be joining the film.

Appearently Russel Crowe is planning on playing Bill Hicks.

"I have another project based on the life of comedian Bill Hicks, which is going from treatment to draft stage with Kiwi writer Mark Staufer."

It is understood he is considering playing the main role of Hicks — a controversial and brilliant American comedian who battled drug and alcohol abuse before dying from cancer at 32.

I'm not sure if the same episode shows on the same day in every market, but the episode playing here today on PBS was the one with Will Arnett as "Max the Magician".
The whole first segment of the show deals with Arnett's magician character, who is even introduced with some "Final Countdown"-esque music playing in the background!

If he gets overloaded with too much stuff, he falls into a hole in the ground! Please help Steve! All he needs is you! Fox is high on “Pineapple Express” director David Gordon Green.

The network has greenlit a pilot presentation for “Good Vibes,” a half-hour animated comedy written by Mr. Green. The project, from 20th Century Fox TV, is described as a coming-of-age story told against the backdrop of a beach community.

Mr. Green is partnering with Mike Clements ("The Life and Times of Tim"), Tom Werner ("That '70s Show") and Brad Abelson to executive produce "Vibes."

“Good Vibes” represents Mr. Green’s first big stab at TV comedy. He wrote and directed the 2007 Sundance feature “Snow Angels,” as well as “All the Real Girls” and “George Washington.” He’s currently adapting the Brad Land memoir “Goat” as a feature.

I was just reading this article (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=49158) about upcoming Disney movies, and one of their upcoming projects for 2009 is a remake of "A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey starring not only as Ebenezer Scrooge, but also as the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Sounds OK, right?
But it's being directed by Robert Zemeckis, and it's going to be done using motion-capture technology, like "The Polar Express".
(Gob voice) COME ON! If there's one actor who doesn't need computer "help" to play a bunch of different characters, it's Jim Carrey. What is Zemeckis's fascination with this process? "Polar Express" was just creepy, and "Beowulf" sucked. I almost got excited about seeing Jim Carrey be funny again, but now I'm just dreading this.

(Other reasons to hate Disney: A sequel to "Wild Hogs", and Pixar deciding to do "Cars 2" instead of "The Incredibles 2")

Fox is developing a redo of Jennifer Saunders' enduring Britcom "Absolutely Fabulous," to be exec produced by Mitch Hurwitz, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum for Sony Pictures TV, Tantamount and BBC Worldwide America.

Christine Zander ("Saturday Night Live") is set to write the script and will exec produce along with the BBC's Ian Moffet and original series creator Saunders. Fox has given Sony a script order with hefty penalty attached.

The latest attempt at a U.S. rendition of "Ab Fab" will be transplanted to L.A. but retain the basic template of the original, revolving around the friendship of two boozy, over-40 best friends who are desperate to stay hip and youthful and who carry on under the disapproving eye of Edina's teenage daughter, Saffy.

More than a decade ago, Roseanne Barr worked on developing a U.S. version of the show with Carrie Fisher for ABC. CBS' 1995-98 Cybill Shepherd comedy "Cybill" had an "Ab Fab" flavor to it. Another short-lived 1995 sitcom, CBS' "High Society," starring Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell, was a thinly veiled imitation.

Original series starred Saunders and Joanna Lumley. It was a big hit in Britain and successful import for Comedy Central. In the U.K., "Ab Fab" ran as a regular series from 1992-95, with a two-part finale airing in 1996. Saunders and Lumley reunited for further adventures with fresh segs produced in 2001 and 2003.
