I got mass effect and for a while did only those boring boring parts where you are on desolate featureless planets finding satellites and stuff. That was a mistake. I got bored and stopped playing it. Now I want to finish it but I can't find it my disc. Don't make the same mistakes I did. Man using that future humvee was boring.

1) Mass Effect is one of the greatest games I've ever played, and is one of the best sci-fi stories ever. Love that goddamn thing.
2) Wii Fit is great, but I should have started it before I had the baby, not after. My back hurts. It is more difficult than you might think it is, but only the yoga and the strength training. The aerobics are kind of not that great at accurate movement tracking, and the balance games are very accurate, but not any kind of legitimate workout.
3) Mega Man 9 gives me pleasure to imagine.
4) Penny Arcade: On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness is delightful, even if I'm not sure I'm using the combat controls right. I just wish it was as vastly developed as a full-price game would be. The concept has depth, the gameplay does not.
5) Now that I've beaten GTA 4, I am still enjoying the obligatory turning on of the game to get into a pointless armageddon with police. The multiplayer won't connect me to players still, even with a new router, which is obnoxious since no other game seems to have this problem. It was fun when I first played Multiplayer, but it's been completely inaccessible for a long time now.
6) My wife and I are going to invest in Pokemons Pearl and Diamond, because having our two DSes around seems to be the easiest way to play a video game with a baby around. And we were really into Pokeman back in the Red/Blue/Yellow days.
7) I want to play Okami for Wii. I was so jealous of people with non-broken PS2s when it came out, and it seems from what I've heard about the gameplay to be a very logical Wii title.

3) Mega Man 9 gives me pleasure to imagine.
Me too. Even though I'm a fan of all six of the classic series, I not stubborn to admit that they have only been truly good up to 2 or 3. Yet, I think 10 dollars is cheap enough to support a great concept that is Megaman 9. If it's successful, other companies might make classic new additions to their game series. Technology has come far enough to make it 100 times easier to develop and distribute titles like this, they can really make something great if it keeps up.
Also, I haven't found word of this anywhere, but will 9 have a NES-like soundtrack as well. One of the best things about Megaman was the music and it would be pretty jarring if it didn't.

July 11, 2008, 9:55 AM
Mega Man was pretty good, a solid take on the side-scrolling adventure game of the 8-bit world.
Mega Man 2 was awesome. Clearly the designers were inspired to create a cartoony universe full of weird, expressive robots for Mega Man to fight. They took awkward, nonthreatening villain names like Bubble Man and somehow made him sinister and challenging, his lair something unique and fun to break into.
Mega Man 3 was kinda cool with that dog, but let's face it, animal sidekicks aren't a good sign. I could tell you all the villains from 1 and 2 from memory but not a single one from 3 without looking it up. I remember thinking the game was fun, but I think I put it down without beating it.
I bought 4 but didn't particularly get addicted. I occaisonally bought into offshoots, purchasing "Adventures" and really enjoying it but not finishing it. I think I liked the first Mega Man X game, but stopped after that. Also, I got to late high school and college at that point, and was trying in vain to leave the house and talk to ladies.
I'm interested as well to see how the music and overall ambience pans out. I'm hoping it's an inspired homage to the series and a lot like Mega Man 2, not the overly complicated stuff that the series kept trying to bust out.

I think 3-6 worked for me because I had only 1 and 2 for the longest time and then when a video store opened near me I was surprised to see that there was a Megaman 3,4, and 5 that I never even heard of (Nintendo Power would probably be the only way you would of) so I rented them all and played them like one seamless stream of megaman fun. I would of probably been more critical if I knew about the releases beforehand and were anticipating them only to find out that they are literally the same game over and over again.
I didn't like the X series because by then the basic gameplay began to become wary for me and though it had nice new graphics and sound it was the same game but with a complicated scavanger hunt to get upgrades which I hated! Also, I was a Genesis Kid so I had to actually have to buy RAM for my computer to play the PC port.

I think I only ever played the first Mega Man on NES. I remember enjoying it, but something about it made me never want to play it again, or go near a sequel. I think it was just a bit too much game for me at that age or something. (If I went back I'd probably realize it was really short.)

It can be short, if you're good at it. I stink at most games, and Mega Man is notoriously unforgiving. I suppose my run-and-gun methods aren't necessarily the best strategy, or I didn't push it hard enough. But I still love the series, especially MM2. The music alone is great, which is why I love The Minibosses. (http://minibosses.com/)

I will certainly be getting mega man 9 whenever it comes out. I think it's been established that 2 was the best, but i really liked X and played that one the most probably. I know it's probably not the best but it came out right when I was at my peak of being video game obsessed. It's about time they start putting all the old mega man games on the virtual console.

Mega Mens 4-6 became a lot more of a brawl. In the first 3, you can avoid all the enemy attacks and counter and so on, conserve your life as you would in most games. 4 started the trend where you're GOING to get hit. Constantly! There's life and 1ups to be found everywhere, but you're basically playing the game and before every jump you have to calculate if the 12 enemies hitting you is going to knock you into the gap or if you'll barely make it over

That's how I approached it the first time around. Turns out I'm a pretty nice guy. I'm not above a little smuggling here and there, and apparently I like to bang hot religious chicks on spaceships. The only really tough decision for me was at the end, when I let the council explode. I told myself it was because Soveriegn was the primary objective, but part me was all, "fuck those alien assholes". Not many games have ever made me question my decisions before.
My only complaint is that, aside from Wrex, the characters weren't all that memorable. I ended up using the same 3 characters most of the time. I wanted a Salarian and a Volus on my team.
I'm going to finish GTA IV, and then the galaxy is fucked. I'm going to give myself some badass facial hair and treat everyone like garbage. I also want to get some additional weapon and biotic acheivements, and I guess I'll go to every planet and try to get my character to level 60.

July 16, 2008, 10:21 AM
I have read there is/was supposed to be an expansion with a Salarian team member you could acquire, but I can no longer find the link so it may have been a false rumor that got taken off the couple websites it was on. I would love a Volus! They are pretty cool, and their diplomat is hilariously dickish.
Goddamn I love Mass Effect.
My one true gripe was spelled out wonderfully on Penny Arcade when the first expansion came out- you can't save your game when you beat it, and continue side missions post-win. That would be the best way to play the expansion if you'd beat the game, instead of playing it by loading an old saved game. They really dropped the ball there- could have been sooooo much more open ended gameplay that way.
I sort of agree about memorable characters- I think the problem is Wrex set the bar too high. The other characters aren't BAD, but they're not that funny or dicey either. Everyone is very serious and overly loyal to you- a little more dissention in the ranks would have gone a long way.

Nintendo is facing a ban of the classic/GC controller. They're not willingly taking their products off the shelves. Basically, they lost a patent lawsuit and then said that $21 million was too excessive a compensation fee.
How will Nintendo get out of this one? They'll have to either post a bond or put royalties in an escrow account to avoid a sale halt, according to Anascape's lawyer Doug Cawley. Nintendo of course plans to appeal the verdict, claiming it didn't use Anascape's technology.

Yeah, I know of the original story, but nothing in that article says that they won't be selling the Wii Classic Controller anymore.
Here's the skinny on what it actually affects:
* The GameCube or WaveBird controllers, which Nintendo no longer makes.
* The Wii Classic Controller (Nintendo's Charlie Scibetta says the company will still be able to sell it pending Nintendo's appeal).

Also, to anyone who has played Echochrome; I don't think its my controllers but sometimes the puzzle will rotate itself slightly without my input and at random times. This is especially frustrating when the name of the game is to position it juuuust so. The controls seem a little clunky, but it could just be a learning curve. I think part of my problem is that I try to use the force constantly, and it has an energy bar that wears out.

I could never force grab what I was actually aiming for. It didn't cause me much trouble, but it was still annoying to aim for a TIE fighter and grab a random box instead. It was very fun though.
I just finished Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Aside from the villains you fight for the last third of the game, everything about the game was fun. I judged it rather harshly based on the not-great demo they released.

Since I have a console (Wii) now for the first time in a few video game generations, I need some help. I am really really jonesing for a good hockey game. NHL 94 and NHL 95 are probably the best hockey games ever. It would appear, though, that I have a choice between the 2k Sports and EA Sports varieties (maybe). (I can't seem to find official confirmation that NHL 09 is coming out for Wii; Gamespot has screenshots of NHL 09 on Wii, but I can find no mention of it coming out on either wikipedia or EA's site. And come on, Madden 09 just came out for the PS2.)
In any event, how crappy have hockey games become in the last 15 years? And, am I going to be disappointed if I get NHL 2k9 over NHL 09 (assuming I can get both)?

I should be on by the end of the month. I'm down and I have a couple of friends that want in. It would be best to get about 30-40 people on a team so real-life conflicts would never keep us from fielding a complete team for scheduled games.

Frustrated at the fact that my local Gamestop will not carry Spore, I picked up No More Heroes for Wii. It's really quite strange, but I really quite like it. It's a sandboxy, run-around-a-city kind of thing, where you fight with light sabers. The fighting, in particular makes excellent use of the Wii motion controls, and it is incredibly satisfying to pull off these crazy moves.
In between chopping up people with fluorescent tubes, you have to run around and do menial jobs for money. I really really like just playing the lawn mowing minigame over and over again. It's oddly zen-like and very satisfying.

I was kind of disappointed that most of the IGN video exclusives were mostly just repackaged footage from the five gameplay videos that Todd Howard was narrating over. But still, any new Fallout 3 content, is good Fallout 3 content. One more month!
The only troubling thing so far with fallout3 I can see is that some of the voiceovers are the same people as in Oblivion. That got tiresome quickly. I hope they hire more voice actors so I don't have to listen to two chicks and three dudes doing all the voices (except for General Zod, Captain Picard, and Richard Sharpe).

I downloaded the demo and it certainly was a blast from the past (even if the game was recently made). However, nearing the end (I'm lookin' at you Elephant #3), it's damn near impossible. Then I read a review of the game in which the guy said the same thing about the whole game. Saying it was great, a throwback, etc but at the same time "why'd they have to make it so impossible to play".

nba 2k9 came out today. it is awesome. i love it. i'm awful at it so far, but i love it.
one gripe: there is no way that i can see to make certain players wear short shorts. there is nothing more jarring than playing a pickup game with bird and magic in baggy shorts, that is driving me absolutely crazy. on the plus side, though, rodman is in the game this year, which is great since he's probably my second favorite player ever behind jordan.

Yeah, I stink at video games so I bought it just for fun, but then I bought MM2 from virtual console and I've gotten farther in that than ever before. Still, less than half the bosses beaten, but yay for me.
The new Mega Man is cool and all but ultimately it was pointless if you can just go back and play MM2. The level design and enemy variety peaked there, if'n you ask me.
Wario Shake It is both super easy and super hard, or I don't get it. To beat the levels you could be mentally deficient and do it, no problem. To accomplish the star-missions, I don't know. I think it involves doing things perfectly which I never do so, poop.

I forgot to mention, I downloaded and played through the PS3 Bioshock demo, and although it was really intense and fun, I don't know if I'll ever try to get through the whole thing. The first time I was faced with more than one enemy it got a little too hairy for someone of my skills.
But what they say is true. The initial crash, being underwater, navigating the tunnel when the fuselage breaks through... it was pretty awesome.

Bioshock is one of the best most badass gaming experiences evar. It was for me, ultimately flawed, but that's something to discuss after you've played it and come out the other side.

I'm glad the demo is bringing new people in that hadn't tried it or gave it a shot. The game is, as Gene said, an incredible video game from atmosphere, to story structure, dialog, characters and the unbelievable art direction and music. Wow. What a fantastic game, not without fault, but something brand new in the first person shooter genre of games, and that's hard to do.
Also, Little Big Planet in a couple weeks. I can't wait to see the ingenuity of people. I remember when Line Rider came out, it was fun and I thought I was doing neat things with it and then... Youtube, whoa... people out there were making mini masterpieces with the limited tools given. Can you imagine what people will create with LBP's tools? Also, I read recently a children's hospital was donated a bunch of PS3's for the cancer ward kids to play LBP in their beds. Nice.

I managed to beat BioShock pretty easily. Took a while, but about halfway through the game I figured out enough strategy that I stopped dying, and I am not big on shooters.
Man, the atmosphere in that game is fantastic from start to finish. Worth it for that alone.

I had never really played a first-person shooter-type game until BioShock, so I had a lot of problem with the fighting. But they have those resurrection chambers throughout the game. The first time I fought a Big Daddy I just attacked got killed, popped up in a chamber and then ran around two corners and attacked it again. I must have died 6 or 7 times before killing it.
But you will get better at fighting. Your weapons improve; you get more powers, some of which will help handle groups; and then you learn how to set up traps and such. The first time I killed a Big Daddy without dying was when I lured one up a couple of flight of stairs into a crossfire of machine-gun turrets.
I really love that game.

Bioshock is definitely a game that demands completion. The last fight is a tad anti-climactic, but there's so much crazy weird shit on the way there that more than justifies the experience.

I must have died 6 or 7 times before killing it.
There's the first major flaw. One you figure out you're effectively immortal combat becomes tedious. In theory you could kill just about everything in the game with your bare hands
Seriously the game is so immersive in so many ways and well realized. Where most games just pay lipservice to immersion and world building this game is all growed up. I played it through twice too.
Second flaw (for me) spoiler:
You really are getting railroaded all the way through, that's pretty much the point of the game, you have no free will and are just a tool of the powers that be. You really only have one major choice to make in the first 7/8ths of the game; do you kill the little sisters or save them? Since death holds nothing more than a nuisance for most of the game that is really all you can choose. Admittedly that IS one of the major points if not THE entire point of the game. Free will etc. etc.
Even with those flaws it is a ride you do not want to miss. I would throw my hard-earned cash at them any day if they're providing that kind of product.

That ending? Or the rest of the game after that fact is revealed?
I thought that the conceit that you had no real choice in matters was an interesting way of handling one of the flaws of the first person shooter on rails concept. Very cinematic but not so fun when you find out that you're just a tool.

How the hell is that no. 1? I can understand top 10, even top 5, but no. 1. I mean that game was great and all, but it had enough issues that it does not deserve to be no. 1. I mean when one of the selling point of the pc port of a game is a completely revamped control/command scheme, it means your game had some serious issues.

Little Big Planet... delayed! A-pparently, one of the background music tracks has two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an and it was thought this would be offensive to some, soooo they decided to delay the game, possibly 10/27 but nothing official yet (at first it was three weeks). Media Molecule said that they got a new master disc burnt and a patch developed within 12 hours of finding out it needed to change. It appears Sony is too skittish and is delaying the game anyway since some who pick it up may not have internet access and the game won't update as intended and then that person may be of the .000001% game population that gives a shit about two lines in a song they're not listsening to, not analyzing, don't know the lyrics for anyway... and even if they did, would know that it came from the Qu'ran and offend their wee sensibilities.

Make sure you ONLY put those games in your queue otherwise you'll end up getting a bunch of lite stuff you only casually put in there to fill it up. One of the bad things about GameFly is that since games cost more than movies, they don't have as many copies. I only just now got Mass Effect after having it in my queue for a while.
