As someone who repeatedly voiced my hatred for the awful 300, I was quite pleasantly surprised by this trailer. There was some of that 300 slow-motion action that I don't like, but in general it looks a lot better to me.
Edit: of course, the YouTube is down now.

I think they got something about the tone right in that Watchmen trailer for sure.
Also, the Watchmen movie deserves it's own freaking thread.

I am going to sound like a nitpicky prick, but I disagree (with the first part, we need a separate thread). One of the best parts of the comic is that the art is good, while never being showy. It feels like its designed to be read and loved, not looked at and marveled at. Its a trailer and an action movie trailer at this point isn't going to be telling the story, but I am nervous that Zak Penn will try to make everything look so cool at the expense of what is a great story.
That said, there is no doubt that I will be seeing this movie and am excited for it.

Holy cow, I cannot wait to see this thing. Calling them "The Watchmen" in the movie does sound cooler than calling them "The Crimebusters." I wonder how much back story they'll include from the Minutemen days-- will the near rape scene in there? I sure hope so!

How come?
Because it's not very good?
That dialog was terrible, and everything that looked remotely interesting seemed ruined by endless amounts of slo-mo and that weird green screen look. And that Muse song didn't fit in at all.
Also, it's super lame that they are going to be called The Watchmen in the film. Apparently they think we are too dumb to figure why it's actually called Watchmen.

Rorschach's voice is completely wrong. And the little footage of slow-mo in there looks pointless (as in, can anyone explain why those shots are slow-mo?). And blah blah etc.

First of all, you have to remember this is just a trailer, so it is designed to get people in to see the film. It is fairly likely that the shots that are slow-mo in the trailer, will be normal speed in the actual film. And whether you want to admit it right now or not, you know you will all go and see it opening weekend.

Considering that I never thought it possible for a major studio to actually make a Watchmen movie...
And, adding to that consideration a further consideration that if a major studio actually DID make a Watchmen movie, I was worried it would look like "Batman & Robin", "Fantastic Four" or "Underdog: The Movie"...
And having a final consideration over all of those previous considerations that if a major studio actually DID make a Watchmen movie and if it wasn't automatically going to be look awful and amateurish and obviously-whoever-they-put-in-charge-didn't-get-it like I figured it would...then, like the LotR trilogy, there would be elements that seem so important to a fan would have to be excised, other elements changed, other elements merged and still other elements that aren't quite how it may have been pictured in our minds eye...
...considering ALL of that...
...this second trailer worked for me--in that, I'm pretty sure I'm going to want to see this movie.
Even if it means grumbling here and there.

at first, i thought this was another crappy mock movie but then the trailer was like "no this is serious." unfortunately, i cannot care about it or take it as serious as it wants me to.
and when i found out that, for some reason, a giant squid that wrecks shit at the end that was taken out.....and people were mad about it? i don't think this is a movie for me. so take that, slow mo cornball costume movie. this one should have stayed in the realm of unfilmable movies.

Still hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst.
And I'm finally getting to a point in my life where I can remember that the book will always be there, no matter what happens in the movie. Everybody I know that has become interested in the story from the trailers and has asked me (their most notable comic geek) has been told that the book is great and well worth reading. Supposedly sales of the graphic novel are huge in stores, so hey - more people giving it a chance can only be a good thing.

Wait, what do you mean? Is the "threat" at the end of the book different in the movie? The only thing I saw in the trailer I didn't recognize was Silk and Manhatten kissing with an atom bomb going off in the background. Is that the new end that threatens humanity?
Jouster
November 14, 2008, 1:49 PM
That's in the book (it's Silk and Nite Owl).
Supposedly it's been changed to something involving "multiple nuclear detonations," or not. No one knows for sure.

Maybe they didn't want to weird the audience out with what could be a slightly over-the-top ending to a mostly (mostly) grounded story and characters. Nukes is real world though so I can see SPOILER's plan going in that direction rather then the book, that'd be alright by me.

It does not really make sense if it is a bunch of nukes at the end. I thought the whole point was that humanity becomes united against the impending alien invasion. They become willing to allow a dictatorship in the process.
After the Batman voice complaints this year you would think they would tone down the gravelly a bit. Though it did not bother me as much the second time.
In the comic does Rorschach actually talk to the cop in the beginning about people killing costumer vigilantes off?
I will still see this movie no matter what.

I'm with Jouster on this.
The trailer makes the movie look closer to Sin City and The Spirit than the Dark Knight, but we'll have to see. There is no way I'd miss this movie, but I still don't see how they are going to pull off everything.
The part that worries me is that the story will be changed because of post-9/11 fears. The way they are making Ozymandias look evil makes me think that the character will be a villian in a much clearer sense than in the book. Add the trailers emphasis on action and Matrix-esque action at that and you have what looks like it could be a big disappointment.

I've read it probably 10-15 times. It's my favorite piece of art ever. What I'm saying is, I'd hate for anyone else to lose the impact of the ending by getting it spoiled in this thread.

At the same time, the book portrays Ozzy as not being so much a villian, but as someone who believes he is doing good for the good of mankind. A necessary evil in the sense of what he plans to unleash. I haven't read it in a while so if I'm wrong about that, oops.

But nukes still results in people teaming up against other people. Interdimensional monsters involve all of humanity teaming up.

That reminds me of the problem I have with the Watchmen ending. Ozymandias didn't create an ongoing alien invasion. He created one incident (granted, with continuing effects of psychic terror throw in). That one incident would create unity among the world for a while but with no other incidents of external aggression wouldn't the powers that be go back to their squabbling?
In Moore's defense this is hinted at it. Ozymandias asks Dr. Manhattan something to the effect of "is this the end?" Before Manhattan disappears he declares nothing ever ends. It's the only time in the book Ozymandias looks unsure of himself.
