I am enjoying people not knowing anything about this so I don't want to answer too much.
I'm doing a pilot for FX. It's autobiographical. I do some standup on the show and some of it is in narrative film form and some of it gets weird. It's kind of hard to describe. It doesn't follow the pattern of any show I've seen. It's not like Seinfeld or Pulp Comics. I really hope it gets picked up because I'm getting to direct in New York again with my little independant film crew that I started with and if I could just keep doing that, and using my standup in this way, I'd be a very happy idiot.
Last night I shot the standup portion at the Comedy Cellar. We also shot scenes upstairs at the Olive Tree restaurant. They are being incredibly helpful there. Anyway, in addition to shooting in front of the real audience, I decided to bring a more controlled audience in for one performance during the day. This way we were able to start and stop at will, take a look at the shots as we went along and record some pieces that are meant as set up or narration for a film piece that would be awkward to film in front of a paying, unwitting audience because they're just short unfinished sentences. So I tweeted and there they were. The people who showed up were really great. They had to stand out in the rain which i was very sorry about and I tried to get them alcohol drinks but the Comedy Cellar wasn't prepared for that so it didn't work out. I was able to get everything I needed. I also filmed the set I did on the first show at the Cellar that night, to get some perhaps more muted responses from people who didn't know I would be on the show. Just the usual laid back Cellar audience. I think I got a good mix.
The reason you're hearing about bees is that when I welcomed them I said "I just need to know before we start if anyone here is allergic to bees." I told them that the show is called "Bee funny" and the rest of what that other post said.
So far Todd Barry, Nick Dipaolo and Rick Shapiro have played parts in the show. We shoot for four more days. I think I'll know in about two weeks if anyone ever gets to see this anywhere.
Thanks to everyone that came. You really did me a huge favor.
